I have a fat ps3 on 3.15 and I have a jailbreak dongle to allow me to run backups etc. and I've been kinda inactive from the whole ps3 jailbreaking/cfw scene for about two years and am kinda behind on all the options now available

I was just wondering if it would be a good option to update my ps3 to 3.55 so I can use all the latest cfw, or if I should stay on 3.14, and the advantages and disadvantages of both the options?

Update to 3.55 OFW and then to 4.30 CFW.

New games are requiring 4.xx based files to run: for example PSN PS2 classics do not work on FW below 4.xx and some games need SPRX/SELF/EBOOT etc etc patches just to run on 3.55... 4.30 eliminates the need to patch anything, just rip and play.

That's why I updated to 4.30 Rogero v2.05 ... eventually

I see no advantage of staying on 3.15...

Unless you want the native OtherOS for Linux/GNU@ 3.15, I see no other reason to stay on 3.15. Then again, the otherOS++ features I've read for 3.55 and above are better than what Sony offered.

Man I miss my original 60GB

Ever since that PHATTY beast died (2 octobers ago #RIP), I switched to slims and just used it to watch movies (cinavia free) and play the occasional game..

I havent touched linux since...

If you update to 3.55 ofw and then to kmeaw. Can you still downgrade to 3.15 ofw without hardware flasher?

i think so but remember to downgrade to OFW 3.14 you need QA flag set
you are only able to enable/disable it on CFW so if enable it on kmeaw then downgrade to OFW 3.15 QA flag is still set and you cant disable it
if you mind about selling it advanced users will check if QA flag is set to see if it was once on CFW

Thanks for info. I will receive my ps3 tomorrow and it should be ofw 2.85 (its new) all what im woried is that i brick it..

Just take any discs out when updating, I would hate to see a potential cfw console go to ofw.
