PS3 not turning on. Solid red light. Admitted n00b. help please!
What model number is your PS3? CECHE
What firmware is your PS3 on? 4.31 Is it a hardware problem? yes Is it a software problem? no If it is a software problem, have you made sure that you have downloaded the latest version of this software? n/a Are you running CFW? no What CFW are you running? n/a Is your console bricked? Don't know Have you ever downgraded your console with hardware flashers? (Teensy, ProgSkeet, E3 Flasher, etc...) No Have you tried searching the forum for someone experiencing the same problem before posting? Yes Describe your problem: I had YLOD about three weeks ago, determined it was a soldering issue and decided to fix it myself because I am out of warranty already. Cracked it open, followed a youtube video, used a heatgun, and applied some Dynex thermal paste (which I now know is ****). Put it back together and it worked great until this week. 2 days ago I got YLOD again, and figured it was the bad thermal paste or not using the heatgun for long enough, so I cracked it open again, heated the cpu/gpu for about 10 minutes each and applied some Antec paste. When I put the system back together it doesn't turn on. The Red standby light is on, but the system will not turn on at all. What have you tried to do to resolve this issue yourself: Reopened the ps3, checked the ribbon connector from the mobo to the power switch board. Tried lifting the metal sensors on power board in case they were not making contact with the buttons. Still, the system does not turn on. I can't afford a new system so I'm deadset on fixing this one. My initial thought is that the sensors on the power switch board are dead since the standby light is still on. But, you all obviously know more than I. Any help on the issue is much appreciated!! |

i don't have much experience with this but if you reflow improperly you can mess it up. i got an xbox360 from a co-worked and thought i'd take if off his hands if he was going to throw it out. i'm pretty sure him or some1 else tried reflowing it before i got it because i tried and no success and had the same problem as before. who ever tried before me must have got it too hot or heated for to long because most of the solder under the chip fused together. so you might be better of to get some1 to reball it for you. i could be wrong and it be something else just putting my 2cents in.

@maharoger
well first you should be using the Arctic thermal paste as its the best on the market right now for ps3. My guess is that the Heatgun screwed something up on the motherboard when you tried the heatgun route the second time. Those thinigs are not very accurate and most of time do more harm then not. Best bet is to find a local computer repair store that has the proper tools for a reflow or reball, and have a professional look at the motherboard. remember : relow = 2week fix - 1yr fix depending on how you play your system reball = permenant fix for system the reason being the reflow effect so low is cause of sony using cheap a$$ thermal paste and non lead based solder. my suggestion is stop using the heat gun as thats only a temp fix and all your doing is buying time with the cheap solder still in use. Get it proffesional reballed, shouldnt be no more then 35$-60$ at a local computer repair store. maybe @hellsing9 might know more or @mrc1978 or @Mr.Dutch

Yeah using the heatgun and some bad reflow is a pain.
Reflow it's a *short-term* solution, try reball if you don't know how to do it. Pay someone to do it for you here in HAX we have one user dedicated to that work. @maharoger

@mr.
Dutch I can't insert a disc as there is already one in the drive.
I'll look into reballing it as soon as I get home. Thanks for the advice. ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* Also, is it definitely a reballing issue? Or is there at least some way I can rule out other issues with the system |
