hi i seen so many things about custom firmware and you need like 3.55 v etc

i just bought a used ps3 the drive doesnt work, apparently it scratchs the disks so i got it for 50 bucks

now the current firmware on it is 4.30 i guessing thats the orginal firmware? how you know if u got the jail break

i tried making a usb stick with swissknife and putting a game on it thats in the .pkg file but it didnt see it

there are different things etc can you guys either send links to proper steps like what to do with pictures or what not
as there is so many different ones etc

to get it to be able to play games from a usb disk or a hard drive
i did notice if u pull the usb stick out and put it back into the computer after using swissknife its unusable to windows

also added pictures to the usb stick and in the ps3 it sees it but try to view it they all say corrupt data

any real good step by step be great

i sure theres tutorials but i must be missing something

If it didn't see the games on the flash drive it's probably OFW.

In any case,System Settings,the System Information to check your firmware I believe

if its on 4.30 im gonna guess you mean official firmware not custom. and the drive scratches discs? how? is it fat? try the drive and see if it loads the game? and im confused because in a fat ps3 as the laser assembly sits the disc is on the spindle in the middle of everything and nothing can touch the sides. and reguardless if the tray is up or down the disc is not touched by anything except the magnet ontop and the center piece that holds the disc. so i cant see it scratching discs really? im thinking of the drive internals and nothing touches the disc except during the eject and load process.... only thing maybe is when the disc goes in and out right near the entrance to the drive there are two grey arms that move up n lock. may be sticking up a tiny bit? but i dunno if that would scratch the disc. unless the other guy opened it and one of the screws that holds the black piece with the internal spinners and to take said disc in and out isnt in right maybe. thats all i can think that could maybe scratch a disc. you say it doesnt work and then it scratches disks? im confused if you mean it doesnt read the disc or it does but it scratches it. can you confirm please? also if you are on 4.30 ofw you will need to downgrade to get to a cfw.

ok sorry for confusion my sister bought it off guy for 50 bucks
but reason he sold it was the drive was ruining the discs he told her i dont have a disc
well i do cuz i had to buy a controller and it came with a game, now it has no tray its as slides in one you would do with the dvd or so and i not sure what kinda of PS3 it is new or old etc
so all i was thinking is maybe the eye of the lazer is scratching it i asked her to email guy about it again

and the version says
System Software Version 4.30

thats all i know

and i didnt wanna install this new disc if its going to damage it

and the FAT part i ment is i formated the 64GB usb stick to FAT32 with the Swisknife software

You are not going to get much help without the model #? It is very easy to find. since it is on the console twice. One is the last part of the serial #, on the white sticker. It is also on the black sticker on the bottom.

starts with CECH

Then if you do have a jailbreakable model, you will need a hardware flasher.

Take a look at this guide to get an idea of what you will have to do.

oh so u cant just upload the new firmware?? is that to get the DVD key like for xbox?
hope its not a paid in ass

and my sister told me just now guy says lazer doesnt work and damages dvds is all i got from what guy told her

but they have so many options wouldnt know what i need
and do u need a dongle?

cuz i wanna put games to a hard drive and just play off it no matter the game for ps3 so the drive never has to read or damage dvds etc

but it goes as like nor =
CECH-21xx (OK To Downgrade) NOR = Teensy++ / Progskeet / E3 Flasher

not sure what all i need or what not
and from the canad mod centeral what would i all need?

You need an e3 flasher and a ps3key dongle

ok ill look them up so what are they exactly?

and do i need to take it apart and take a picture of the one chip?? or this dongle u plug in usb port as i seen other pictures u gotta strip it down and take a picture and then solder or something
