as far as i know avisynth isn't really needed, everything should work with mencoder, maybe in a very rare case you might need it, but i haven't used it yet except when i selected it specifically from the transcode folder..

Just to get a few things clarified.

This runs on the computer and transcodes said videos and streams them to the PS3. The PS3 only needs to find the streaming service so to say.. or whatever it's called.

An application such as showtime are also capable of accessing files over the network, but the transcoding is done on the PS3.

You could thus say:
An advantage to "UMS" would be that a powerful computer might be able to transcode harder things in the future. Also, I assume you could even stream your videos to an OFW PS3.
An advantage to Showtime would be that the transcoding is done on the PS3 and no external media is needed to have any application running that can do the transcoding. Thus Showtime for instance could access a NAS filled with video files without it having running any application. The NAS only needs uPNP or whatever is needed for the PS3 to access the files.

Right?

There isn't much difference, their two flavors of the same software, PS3MS takes changes from UMS, and UMS takes changes from PS3MS. There are some differences (I think the interface itself is the biggest and propably only).

Yes the biggest advantage of showtime is that it can run and transcode video's natively, the biggest disadvantage of showtime is that it transcodes video's natively which the current implementation can't handle properly on most HD content (or DTS audio tracks).. It takes a lot of time and knowledge to rewrite the transcoding parts to take advantage of the PS3's CELL proc and RSX, and even though there are whitepapers out for using the PS3's CELL for decoding, the code on which the whitepapers are published doesn't seem to be available.. (You even have to pay for some whitepapers)..

FrogDr and SuperDre, UMS at this point is much more advanced than PMS. PMS does not use the UMS code - or at least they haven't for several months. There is a comparison table on the UMS website which can be found via the About page.
Also, PMS seems to have stopped development, I'm not sure if it will resume.
Hope that clarifies
