downgrade by hdd replacement

good evening.
I'm new to the ps3 hacking scene as well as to this site.
My name is maurice i am 22 years old and i have a few questions about a little problem i have.
I'm in possesion of a ps3 system on firmware 4.31 and i know this is not downgradable.
But when i remove my old hdd and replace it for another one wich is completely empty will i be able to put on a lower fw version?
I don't mind losing the software and everything else on my hdd.
thank you for any help i will recieve.
grtz maus

What most people fail to realize is that the system software is not on the HDD. It's stored (at least mostly) on an internal flash memory chip which is not writable without some kind of exploit or a flash memory programing device such as a progskeet or E3 flasher. and if your console is not downgradable to 3.56 at least there is no way to install CFW. at 3.56 I believe you can install E3 CFW but Im not sure where I heard this info but this still requires a flasher. If it's not downgradable to 3.55/3.56 then there is no way right now. currently there is no known bootldr2 exploit and that means no way to disable securities that prevent a CFW.

Atm i'm at my work but if i'm not mistaken i'm in possesion of a cech2014a model from 2009.
It's not the latest version but its the one with the rough top so not the fat model i thought.
It's without ps2 compatibilty and without cardreaders and stuff.
According to a link somewhere on this site i must be able to downgrade.
Does the e3 flasher or the progskeet also work with the ofw 4.31 or is this also a no go.
And last but not least is there a possibility to flash without my harddisk in a cradle so that it stays in my ps3?

Other people already said it, but to expand a little:
NAND flashchio consoles: whole FW is stored on the console. This is all fat ps3's that are backwards compatible.
NOR flashchip consoles: part of the firmware is stored on the flash. This is non bc fat consoles and all slims.

Both relies on more than just rhe hdd ;/
