i hate that too
if you cant fix that by cleaning the PS3 from dust (best by opening it) youre going to have a YLOD

clean dust. if that fails.. first is it still in warranty? if so put ofw back and send it in. if not open it and make sure all cables are connected well. not damaged. how old is it? maybe thermal paste is drying up fast?

thermal paste cant cause that
and if he opens the console to clean/renew thermal paster warranty is lost

If he uses warranty won't they send him a refurbished OFW 4.21?

1.un plug the ps3 vac all the vents (use one of them brush adaptors) see if it plays fine

do the following if your not in warranty or dont want a none downgradable console as a replacement.

2. open it and vac it out.
strip it right down as the board will probably be full of dust.

also clean the fan and the fins inside the heat plate / housing

then change the thermal paste for mx5 or arctic silver.

yes the paste being dry can cause this as the gpu controlls the hdmi chip so if the gpu starts to over heat then it will affect the hdmi (also the composite)

but this is a good early sign that you have to act now before something worse happens
