This kind of idea is what pisses off consumers and hackers alike to break into the system and make piracy available more readily.

It think itīs possible to avoid piracy, by forcing the user to be online. Itīs only a matter of time, till this will come.
I would do it for example this way: - No diskdrive at all - Purchasing and downloading only with authentication - Encrypted HDD with capsuled space for every game (similar wp8 does) - Playing only with authentication. So if you are not signed in you canīt play. And if you get managed to install pirated games to the console you need to authenticate. There can be even more "checks" build in on various places in the game, by the developers itself. I think this is the savest thing possible. "You want to stay online" ![]() Itīs an balancing act between usabiltiy and security, and donīt forget that Playstation is not planed as "open system" The idea of "day-one-patch" is not as stupid as you think. ![]() What are you going to do if Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft choose a way like this? Bye Bye console gaming? Most Smartphones are online 24/7

If a console relies on internet to verify games, they had better build in a modem or sim card or something so people who cant afford or cant access internet have access to cellular (or other) network internet (if the entire world is covered) so that you arent forced to buy internet subscription as well as pay out for a new console.
If that day ever comes, they will alienate a lot of people. UBIsoft had a similar thing didn't they, look how that worked out:they scrapped always on DRM, it was ridiculous and no one liked it. At least they listened to feedback.

@sinsizer
Most psn games require online activation in order to use it otherwise, it will tell you to sign in on the store to renew it. That's been defeated with reactpsn. Forcing the user to stay online is not the smartest thing. Your ISP goes down for a few hours, or you chose to go to another isp but you wont have net for a few days, or simply, or your wifi router stops working and in the mean time you're too busy to go get another one and you just want to play for a couple of minutes. Restricting you to online-only is a very risky thing, in some places the internet isn't a luxury, some can't afford high speed internet. Smartphones are not online 24/7 , I can choose to disable wifi and turn off data and I can still use the things I've purchased. Unless they put a sim card on the ps4. Piracy can't be stopped, you can delay it, but never eliminate it. |

@stevorkz
![]() @Theeze You are talking about "now". Yes, right now you can log off with your phone. But a small example: wp8..skype...your online status will be saved in the cloud. You have no possibility to log off or change the user. :D You recognize in which direction this goes. And if you canīt afford an internet connection you can never afford a console ^^ This is all futuristic thinking, and will not happen in the next few years. But as I said, itīs not that far away. Go back 20 years. Have you ever thought that private users get internet connections like we have today? All this social media crap like facebook, twitter an these things? Online gaming? |

Wasn't the 3ds supposed to be updated automatically using some form of wifi deal with bt or something ? Even with no wifi at home it would update and fix holes in its firmware / take a five minute walk and btopen points are all over.
