Are you talking about 3.55 OFW?
Then just take a usb pendrive make a folder on it named 'PS3'
In that folder make another folder named 'UPDATE'
Put the pup file in the update folder.
Plug the pendrive in to your ps3 and eject any dsk that's in your console.
On xmb go to settings and choose update system via Storage media and press X.
Follow the onscreen instructions.

If your select the system update option it will show you 2 options:
Update via internet or update via storage media.
choose update via storage media and then follow onscreen instructions.

PS:
XMB (Cross Media Bar) is the main PS3 menu.

Yes that's correct. But why recovery if you're on OFW.
But true recovery its the same.
Remove disk from the drive.
Put the pup file on the usb drive in the update directory ( X:\PS3\UPDATE\PSUPDAT.PUP)
Plug the drive in the console.
Start in recovery.
Select system update and press X.

Exactly same, but with 3.55 CFW pup instead of OFW pup.

Use my MD5 tool to validate your CFW downloads: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=51288
