This makes me angry at Sony. They obviously have a functional PS2 emulator now which is absolutely capable of booting PS2 discs on non-BC hardware (every classic title has a disc image), but rather than unlock disc booting and make the config file/etc a free download (like Xbox 360 used to do with original Xbox discs), they wrap the original discs in DRM and re-sell it.

I know this will eventually be a GUI application where you drag and drop PS2 isos onto it and it spits out a package, and I can't wait for that

Actually, PSX games look better, as the emulator enhances the graphics and has overall better smoothing, etc... The PS2 emu, on the other hand, is still only outputting at native resolution with practically no enhancement. The GS is hard to emulate, and even harder to tweak in software, but it would have been worth the extra effort. Sony just wanted it done quick.

Agreed. At least microsoft gave the option to run original xbox games. They could have done exactly what sony did like an "xbox classics" move, but I guess they didnt want their customers to hate them by making them buy the same games twice. Sony on the other hand would gladly sacrifice their customers happiness over money.

Not saying Microsoft hasnt got flaws, just saying this a perfect example of how different their business strategies are. I will say though, that Im glad Microsoft didnt make this kind of mistake.

The thing is now, Sony have been robbed of the chance to ever give in and please their customers and release an OFW with 100% ps2 compatibilty. If they ever do it, there is no way of proving that it has nothing to do with ps3 devs releasing this method to boot ps2 games, and its their own fault. Wonder if they will learn something this time and start giving their customers what they want for the sake of the future of Playstation...

To prove my point, I downloaded the GTA-SA pkg directly from sony, extracted, decrypted it with this tool, then loaded the ISO directly on my PS2 using OPL.

I could not, however, make it run on the PS3. I have no idea how reactpsn/edats/rif/raf/rap/whatever works I'm really not much of a pirate. (no offence to people who use reactpsn for legit reasons. *cough*)

Maybe I'll just download all the pkg files directly from Sony and just play them on my PS2?

still need CFW to do this right ? it would be awsome to convert our ps2 games that we already have and just convert them into psn titles and install it on our ps3 slims with no need of CFW.

How are you planning to install them with no custom firmware?
