How to make your own PS3 supercomputer

Everyone has probably already heard of the "hidden" potential of the PS3, and that multiple PS3 put together create basically a supercomputer. A professor form The Cluster Workshop has put together a tutorial on how to create your PS3 supercomputer. Professor Khanna was the first person to assemble a PS3 supercomputer using 8 PS3's.

The official press release reads:
Last year, Khanna’s construction of a small supercomputer using eight Sony-donated Playstation 3 gaming consoles made headlines nationwide in the scientific community. On the consoles, he is solving complex equations designed to predict the properties of gravitational waves generated by the black holes located at the center of the galaxies.

“Science budgets have been significantly dropping over the last decade,” Khanna said. “Here’s a way that people can do science projects less expensively. This new web site will show people how to move forward.”

Typically, scientists rent supercomputer time by the hour. A single simulation can cost more than 5,000 hours at $1 per hour on the National Science Foundation’s TeraGrid computing infrastructure. “For the same cost, you can build your own supercomputer and it works just as well if not better,” Khanna said. “Plus, you can use it over and over again, indefinitely.” The cost for his initial Playstation grid was $4,000.

If you interested you can read the tutorial below.

That's really awesome! I remember when they did the regular Xbox cluster back in the day and how much potential that had... having 8 PS3's linked with their core technology and ability to process virtually everything simultaneously at incredible rates will be a milestone for the research and development fields. When people say time is money... these guys take it literally so ya, very cool. My mom has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and my dad has Rheumatoid Arthritis so in all honesty... anything that could be an inexpensive tool and could benefit the research fields (which are highly under funded) is a huge deal to me.

Grats on the info man, very cool . Thanks for posting.

What was?
PS3? Linux? MPI? :musicus:

this is a great project but I really doubt the claim that 8 PS3s will beat 200 node Blue Gene

I have to agree, if it's put to good use and diseases are cured then great, nobody cares what nation did it, aslong as lives are saved.

Just want to give credit... Penaten was the first to post about this subject (search "ps3 cluster) on this forum.
Now, in my opinion, (and this is for people with no brains) THIS IS NOT GOING TO CRACK THE PS3 FOR HOMEBREW...and i repeat WILL NOT CRACK IT! Just because there is the term "supercomputer" doesn't mean that it can magicly find a security hole and hack the ps3, you still have to know what your looking for to be able to make any progress.
Now having incressed processing power might help for certant aplications, but nothing in the way for making hombrew apear out of thin air.

like i said, my opinion...

oh... and when does the fact of who discovered what not matter to people? If some Indian guy found it out first, he should get credit... not get some flaming posts about "who cares if it was an Indian guy", or "Indian girls are hot"... grow up and post some helpful info, not stupid stuff that makes looking for helpful info take that much longer...

Your the one complaining about it so in essence...your not helping out your own cause..?

And I'm glad to see that the PS3 can be used in so many ways to help science and such. folding@home is great, and now this should help with something to.

Good post Pirate. Finally one thats useful to EVERYONE, not just the PS3 communtiy.
