Sony anwers to Geohot's PS3 hack with a patent

SKFU has stumbled across a new patent for a method to protect against encrypted section attacks

To quote from SKFU blog and patent below:
Recently a new patent by a SONY employee was published on the patent site at faqs.org. It seems it is SONY's answer for Geohot's progress. Take a look here:

"A method, system, and computer-usable medium are disclosed for controlling unauthorized access to encrypted application program code. Predetermined program code is encrypted with a first key. The hash value of an application verification certificate associated with a second key is calculated by performing a one-way hash function. Binding operations are then performed with the first key and the calculated hash value to generate a third key, which is a binding key. The binding key is encrypted with a fourth key to generate an encrypted binding key, which is then embedded in the application. The application is digitally signed with a fifth key to generate an encrypted and signed program code image. To decrypt the encrypted program code, the application verification key certificate is verified and in turn is used to verify the authenticity of the encrypted and signed program code image. The encrypted binding key is then decrypted with a sixth key to extract the binding key. The hash value of the application verification certificate associated with the second key is then calculated and used with the extracted binding key to extract the first key. The extracted first key is then used to decrypt the encrypted application code."
You can read the full patent here.

    ????

This would not slow load times by any means but yes if a hack is not found quick enough to use what we already have we coudl be rendered screwed for some time AGAIN. I am a low level programmer and anyone with short knowledge with the exploit should get crackin for a hack soon as from what I understand, if we get it hacked they cant patch it even after they release whats in this patent. My PS3 2.6 FW version is still going and its recommended that after seeing this, if you want to hack it DONT update it.... thats what I am thinking for now.

    Post More News!

I think this should be considered as news. A week ago GeoHot managed to dump lv2 (yes the GameOS). Mathieulh has confirmed it. If you want proof visit his twitter or go to GeoHot's blog. Mathieulh also mentioned that there's some sort of team working on reverse engineering the dumps. Don't know what their goals are whether they were successful so far...

This is quite sly, but the world only needs to gain access to the PS3 once to gain a better understanding. Following that, it is going to be an endless contest of ingenuity between cunning coders and legal personae and equally cunning hackers.

    missing the point

I doubt any legal council would be showing up anywhere, this is just sonys answer to what Geohot has done.... And if they come out with an update it coudl render the exploit useless and not worth crap. But if so who on these forms would update their console for a risk at custom firmware. Personally I sitll have a 1.8 console with a dead drive waiting for a hack so I will revive it. As just like the PSP we may need a very low firmware for the first mod and more more after...
