HowTo: Use an external IDE HDD Case to connect an Internal 3,5" Sata HDD as PS3 HDD

So This is my first tut for you guys. Since i had an 640 GB external Sata HDD Flying around i thought it would be cool if i could use it for my PS3 Instead of buying an new internal one. So heres what you need and how you go. The costs (at least for me) are low. I only had to buy an Sata Extension Cable which costs around 3 Euro. The other things i had all flying around at home. Also if im correct this should minimize the risk of getting a YLOD Cause your internal HDD cant overheat your PS3 anymore.

    What you need:

    A PS3

    An External IDE HDD Case

An IDE to Sata Power Converter

    An Sata Extension Cable

    An internal Sata HDD

First put your PS3 up like this

Then open the cover which hides the currently installed internal HDD

Remove the BLUE Screw. Dont know if its blue everytime but for me its blue ^^

    Pull your HDD Backwards.

Now you can pull out your internal HDD

You can see now on the left side the Sata Connectors.

On my Sata Extension Cable where some fittings which i had to cut off otherwise the Extension Cable wouldnt have fit.

Next step connect that cable to your PS3

After we opened the External HDD Case we now can connect the IDE to Sata Power Converter to the External Power Input

Next you connect the Sata Power Cable to the Internal Sata HDD you want to connect to your PS3

You can now connect the Sata HDD to the Extension Cable so it should look like this (well some kind of) ^^

Now your PS3 should say something like this:

For those of you who dont understand German:
Your HDD must be formatted. If your format the Drive all Data on the drive will be deleted. Do you want to format?

    Yes No

Press the PS-Button on your Controller to use it.

If you press yes the question will popup again. After you press yes again it will format the HDD into Playstation Format. After that your System Info will look like this:

Instead of the old 60GB i had before i now have ~600 GB.

I was hoping this tut was for the slim model. For 25 euros you can already get a nice, good looking adapter for larger drives

Yeah that could work as well but im not 100% sure. Cause i dont know if its just like a normal SATA Cable. If you look at the Picture i made you can see one side is the normale Sata Cable side the right one which is completely black. The brown one is the thing you need cause the internal connector in the PS3 is just a normal Sata Connector and not the one you have on the SATA HDD.

You have to have a Cable with a Male and a Female Connector.
The one with the golden thingy is the Male Adapter. The other one is the female one. In your PS3 you have a Female Adapter and most normal SATA Cables have two Female Adapters.

    PS3 doesn't have Molex Connectors...

Just buy a Sata power extender and a sata cable and hook it up to the ps3 and hdd.

Well that wont work cause the PS3 doesnt have enough power to power on an 3,5" HDD instead of an 2,5" Sata HDD.

Thats the reason im using an external HDD Case to get power for my HDD.
