Sony: “PS4 investment much, much smaller than PS3″

Ahead of the imminent PS4 release date, Sony has confirmed that the level of investment poured into its next-generation console is considerably lower than that heaped on the PS3.

Despite have spent years developing its fourth-generation PlayStation console, Sony has revealed that in a bid to reduce the level of losses it saw with the PS3, the level of PS4 investment has been “much, much smaller” than on its past console efforts.

“The amount of investment [in PS4] is much, much smaller,” Sony’s Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato said. Remaining vague on exactly how much less investment the company had given the PS4, he added: “I cannot give you the absolute amount.”

Although the PS3 launched way back in late 2006, Sony has openly acknowledged that due to the high level of investment heaped on the console, the much loved gamer did not turn a profit until 2011. Having hit retailers priced £425, Sony sold the PS3 at a considerable loss, with each Blu-ray hosting console originally costing north of $800 (£515) to produce.

Reassuring investors that similar losses will not be repeated with the PS4, Andrew House, Head of Sony Computer Entertainment said “We will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3.”

Although a PS4 release date has yet to be formally confirmed, it is expected that the console will launch sometime between late October and early November. The PS4 price has been formally set at £349, a full £80 cheaper than its leading rival, Microsoft’s soon to launch Xbox One.

    I guess I'll wait at least a year until I buy a PS4.
It's not that I don't have the funds, it's just there's still a lot of life on the PS3 and GTA VI will take its time to be released so, until then, I'll just stick to PS3.
As for the losses, I think Sony is a bit ahead of Microsoft since it has a lower price tag on the PS4, but it's still too early to tell how Sony's removal of features might drive away potential customers, just like it happened with PS3.
Still, there's good news for Sony, since their initial stock won't be enough to accomodate all of the preorders that have already been made.

One good side of this may be that they won't cripple the later models as they did the PS3, but knowing Sony, I doubt that lol

It's not only Sony, but I get what you mean. For instance, my Wii doesn't have GC ports.
The original 60 GB PS3 had native backwards compatibility and flash card readers.
I think it all comes down to production costs.
Basically, in order to have a lower priced console you have to remove features.
However, software features (native backwards compatibility and OtherOS) should never ever have to be removed. That was just a Sony's whim.

The reason you are not investing Sony on PS4 compared to the investment you did on PS3 is because now you know that everybody questions your integrity and they are not going to invest either and this is not going to change, that's why. A phrase was enough to elaborate acurately the whole reason.
    ...and the worlds shall reconnect.[/CENTER]

Sony doesn't have any innovations to invest on. The controller is the biggest change they've made from the PS3. That probably required little investment on their part. What they're best known for is making a more powerful version of their last gen and the PS4 looks to be no exception. They also usually implement competitive console features into their own. Since Sony already has the remote play feature that they can use to capitalize on the Wii U's remote capabilities, there's not much for them to do there either. Still, this gen is Sony's to lose. I think the machine will be no less awesome than the PS3 at it's inception. I won't get one at launch, but I will get one eventually. I plan on upgrading my PC one more time before then.

They did not design the gpu and cpu themselves this time which does really save a lot at launch however the flipside may be that because of the fixed price for the chips and the fact that they can't just switch manufacturer mid generation may also mean that the console will drop less in price during its generation.

@BobbyBangin Indeed, I think the PS2 > PS3 (3D to HD era) step was a bigger league than PS3 > PS4 is going to be
