    End of an Era: Sony Discontinues PSP

    Sony has officially announced the end is near as they are pulling the plug on the PlayStation Portable video game machine, after a great run of 10 years.
    This will allow Sony to focus more on reviving sales of it's successor, PlayStation Vita.

    Tokyo-based Sony reported Tuesday that shipments for the PSP have already ended in North America in January, will end in Japan this month, and will be ending later on in the year in Europe.

    Japanese PSP owners have been offered discounts on the Vita as well as downloads, but are still undecided for those in other makets. Japan accounts for the strongest Vita market, as they are currently almost single handedly holding up Vita sales. Sales for the device are dismal in the US and UK.

    The PSP went on sale in December 2004, debuting at $250.00, and have since sold somewhere around 80 million copies.

    Sony reported a $1.3 billion loss for last fiscal year and is expecting to stay in the red this year, siting the rising popularity of gaming among smart phones and other devices as a reason for their struggles. However, the Nintendo 3DS sales seems to be faring well, in spite of the competition from these newcomers.

    Critical analysts of the Vita say it has not sold in well or in significant numbers. Unlike the PS3 and PS4, Sony does not release the cumulative global unit sales of the Vita and combines it with the PSP sales totals.

    Most next gen consoles are just a supped up version of their predecessor. Same goes for the GC>Wii>Wii U, PS>PS2>PS3>PS4, and Xbox>Xbox 360>Xbox One. Not since the days of the cartridges have consoles seemed to be truly unique from each other. Nintendo is the King at bringing innovating peripherals to their consoles and 3D to the 3DS, but almost all consoles are just more powerful versions of their former selves.

    Because they only guaranteed 10 years of support. I don't believe that Sony actually promised ten for the PSP when it launched though. Hence why they are doing it earlier than 10...

    They are dumping it most likely though to force developers to make games for the Vita instead of PSP. Japanese devs still release games for PSP only and not Vita, so this is a way to force them off of the old platform.

    Considering that the Vita is performing terribly, even compared to the Wii U, that doesn't seem like such a good strategy. Especially if devs base their their decision to develop for the Vita on the same basis of success that they do for the Wii U.

    Japanese devs. Not world wide. It's strongest market is Japan, but developers in Japan keep releasing for PSP probably because it's cheaper to develop for. I haven't seen any good releases for the PSP here since the Vita came out... Japan though keeps getting new anime/manga adaptation PSP games etc.

    I feel sad, the PSP was/is a very nifty machine... and my launch PSP bought on the very first day the PSP became available here in the Netherlands still works today, even without the need of replacing the battery

    Making quality products was never a problem for $ony, handling customers is another story...

    I bought my psp in 2007 and ever since that day I have played it and still do!
    They last forever and are the best handheld systems.
    @BobbyBangin
    By the way, copies? I thought copies are what you call video game tapes?
    These are systems.....
