Nintendo Releasing New "More Powerful" 3DS

Nintendo revealed today, during their Japanese Nintendo direct, that a new version of the 3DS will be released. New features include a second stick built in, a more powerful processor. better battery, HTML compatible browser, Micro SD compatibility, and two additional shoulder buttons, which will be placed next to the already existing ZL and ZR buttons.

Both the new 3DS and the 3DSLL will also feature a nub analog, placed above the A, B, X and Y buttons. The existing buttons have been colored in the same style as the old-school SNES controller buttons.

The system is slated for a release in Japan this year, but a Nintendo of America representative says in a statement that the company has no plans to launch the new 3DS models in North America until 2015. In the statement released, he is quoted as saying -

"Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing. We have no plans to launch these products in the Americas this year. We have a variety of compelling portable gaming options for consumers now and through the holiday shopping season, including Nintendo 2DS and Nintendo 3DS XL. We also have a strong library of hundreds of games for these systems that appeal to all kinds of players, with titles like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire still on the way before the end of the year."

The system has also been announced to have a more powerful CPU than the original 3DS. According to Nintendo, this will allow for faster eShop browsing and downloading as well as more powerful graphics. In fact, Nintendo is working on a new game 'Xenoblade Chronicles' that will only run on the new hardware.

The new 3DS is also coming equipped with new NFC support, which will allow for local sharing and gaming, but is being especially incorporated for use with Nintendo's soon to be released amiibo figures via NFC on the bottom touch screen. Nintendo will also be selling an NFC adapter for existing devices.

Judging from the pictures, the device will also support a bottom places Micro-SD card, in place of the old side loading SD card.

Nintendo has also made the device customizable with sliding custom covers that will come with the device.

Nintendo has also announced that the stereoscopic 3D will be superior to the previous 3DS device.

Two models are scheduled for release in October of 2014 in Japan, but no date has yet been set for the Western release in 2015.

While a new, improved and more powerful 3DS is definitely appealing, It's sure to leave all of their 44 million+ owners of the original fuming at the prospect being forced to purchase the version in order to play new games.

This also would appear to put a damper on things for those of us looking forward to upcoming release of Smealum's 3DS homebrew hack.

With any luck, they'll make a new, more powerful version of the Wii U.

"Two models are scheduled for release in October of 2011 and Japan"

    Ahem....

And Xenoblade Chronicles for 3DS? No.... Im pretty sure its a Xenogears-game.
Xenoblade Chronicles was a Wii game, and Xenoblade Chronicles X is a WiiU game. But hey, if they are indeed making one for the 3DS, Id buy one in half a heartbeat

Ah well, its a stupid thing to do, changing the performance like that and then make games that wont run on the older rev. They shouldve just released it as a new generation in that case, imo.

Aren't SNES controller buttons grey and purple? I know the colors look familiar but I thought they were grey and purple.

Also isn't there an additional joystick addon thing for the 3ds? I think it was for Resident evil or kid icarus.

It wasnt called famicon in EU. Famicon was only used in Japan iirc, which stood for "Family Computer" and "Super Family Computer" respectively.

Edit: and Yeah, the circelpad is an addon for the 3DS, one of those things only used by 1-2 games lol.

I don't know why they just couldn't have released an update that overclocks the processor and use the Circle Pad Pro for games, instead of make one where it's obsolete. It'd be cheaper to just buy the add on than to buy a whole new system. I felt the same way when the 3DS XL came out, after I bought a 3DS as I do now that I've bought a circle pad pro for the extra stick and shoulder buttons, just to have them integrate that into the console. Nintendo has pissed me off like this before. For instance, the 3DS and XL situation, as well as I would have rather had the Zelda bundle Wii U for $300.00 than to pay almost $400.00 for the deluxe at launch.

quoted from the washington post=Nintendo will release the New 3DS and New 3DS LL in Japan on Oct. 11; a report from Eurogamer said the devices will launch in Europe sometime next year. There's no timeline set for the United States, Nintendo confirmed to The Washington Post. "Different territories make their own business decisions regarding individual products and timing," Nintendo of America said in a statement.
