PS3Hax member sandungas, has released his own hand-made-from-scratch fake Blu Ray structures. This is mainly for developers and better understanding of the PS3 system, so if you are not a dev this news is not for you. The files released are used to understand and help document the structure of all valid CATEGORY values.

    To quote readme:

    Blu-Ray fake discs by sandungas
    ————————————————

These are “fake” Blu-Ray structures with the minimall parameters inside SFO’s/SFX’s and the needed HYBRID_FLAG’s inside PS3_DISC.SFB
All the files are 100% hand made from scratch and tested, reduced to the minimall needed to work with the purpose of understand the structure and to document all valid CATEGORY values

All them can be mounted with any “backup manager” like a normal game, mixed with a real game to add content like patches, to make a video disc with all the chapters of a video serie, etc…
The other way to “play” with this is by experimenting different values and structures looking for “non standard” uses, using them in combination with other tweaks from cfw, etc… feel free to experiment

All the .replaceme files are dummyes (0kb) replace them with the correct file/name/format
All the names of the .txt files are explanatory of the contents of the SFO’s/SFX’s … can be removed, but its not necesary, the system will ignore them

More information can be found at the READ MORE link at authors original post.

Might not be useful for some of you, but it was for me.

A new team calling themselves Mega hiper ultra fantastico Team released details on how to use files to ‘re-marry’ a BD drive.

Max1985 at DemonHades has posted a link to the complete package of the previously leaked much needed files along with what seems to be a modded ‘lv2diag.self’ that seems to be able to finally truely ‘re-marry’ a Blu-Ray drive board on a PS3 console!

    Here is a short tutorial:

Ladies & Gentlemen finally we can remarry BD boards to different consoles!

    * The file was just posted over at DemonHades by one of the members (max1985)
    * Put these onto a blank usb stick (not the devusb folder, just it’s contents) & add a 2.30 PUP FILE!
    * Put in the servive mode dongle and get into factory service mode.
    * Put the newly created USB stick into port 0 (closest to the reader) and run.
    * After you run the initial remarry process, do not take it out of factory service mode.
    * Put a BD disc in and run it on the PS3. (This restores your DRL files!)
    * The you can take it out of factory service mode.
    * Launch as normal.

I have not done extensive testing yet, but have just remarried a BD board from a 60gig launch to a 40gig console.

    READ (IMPORTANT!)

As with all new things, doing this totally at the end-user risk, people have not done any testing on this very risky firmware progress. But a couple of facts are, their may be different models which will NOT work at all, due to the fact some BD Drives are designed for Dual-Eye lasers vs. Single-Eye lasers, and IDE vs. SATA drive hookup. Also this most likely is only designed for the FAT 256mb NAND systems, as the 16mb NOR and Slim’s use a different drive board marriage system. And finally DO NOT TRY THIS ON v3.56 consoles, as YOU CURRENTLY CAN’T EXIT SERVICE MODE!

A few weeks ago we told you about a new project known as #PS3BluRay who were trying to restore BluRay compatibility to downgraded PS3′s. There was a leak related a while ago, but now the OFFICIAL tool is done and ready for release by the team.

    To quote:

    Project #PS3bluray
    DRLtools v0.90 for PS3 01.01.2011

    BACKGROUND
Our quest to restore BD playback for those PS3s that lost it after downgrading continues. Unfortunately our project suffered a serious setback last week when one of our discoveries was prematurely leaked: A potentially harmful and incomplete method to restore BD playback was disclosed by an attention-seeking individual. It should be noted that the fix in question is only a “band-aid” solution to the problem. There is a very real possibility of future drive revocation resulting in PERMANENTLY broken playback! However, to make using it safer for those who wish to apply it, we have created this collection of DRL Tools. In the meantime we are continuing to work on a permanent and simple solution for all PS3s.

The tools in the suite are:
    - DRLbackup v0.90 (PS3 pkg used to backup DRL1 / DRL2 files to a USB drive)
    - DRLgen v0.90 (Windows .net 2.0 application to derive DRL1 / DRL2 files from an MKB_RO.inf file)
    - DRLcopy v0.90 (PS3 pkg to restore previously backed-up DRL1 / DRL2 files or to copy derived DRL1 / DRL2 files from DRLgen)

    HOW IT WORKS
Each Blu-Ray movie contains a Media Key Block (MKB) as part of its copy protection scheme. Newer movies feature higher MKBs; the latest one is MKB v20. Addtionally, each BD movie has a unique encrypted title key. Both are stored inside the AACS/MKB_RO.inf file of each disc. Fixing BD playback requires exact knowledge of which was the first instance of the highest MKB played so far. DRLgen can be used to identify the Blu-Ray movie with the highest MKB, and then create replacement DRL1/2 files for your PS3 which then restore BD playback.

    REQUIREMENTS
    1. A means to access Blu-Ray title discs to gather the AACS/MKB_RO.inf file, a Blu-Ray drive in a Mac / Windows PC makes the process easiest. Alternatively, SAK v1.0 can be installed as an OtherOS on the PS3 with firmware 3.15 or lower to accomplish this task.
    2. Explicit knowledge of EVERY blu-ray title the blu-ray drive has played and the MKB versions of those discs. WARNING: While you can safely check every BD’s MKB with DRLgen, you should limit the number of attempts of installing DRLs on the PS3, as the full details of the AACS “traitor tracking system” are not well known.
    3. A FAT32 USB storage device to store and retrieve MKB_RO.inf and DRL files.

    DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
Full instructions are available on the Project #PS3bluray wiki http://ps3bluray.info/?title=DRLtools

    ABOUT THE TOOLS
DRLgen is a new and SAFER utility that uses the MKB_RO.inf from a Blu-Ray disc to derive correctly formatted DRL1 and DRL2 files easily every time. No difficult hex editing or byte-counting is involved. It is important to note that DRLgen uses the AACS’ specification for the MKB format and does not simply assume DRL records start at a specific position and are of a specific length. The previously leaked information makes all these assumptions and is flat out INCORRECT in many situations today, and is NOT future proof and could lead to permanently broken playback.

DRLbackup, previously released, has been updated to work in cooperation with the other two tools. As a best practice, a backup of the DRL1 / DRL2 files should be made prior to any system downgrade. Use in conjunction with DRLcopy for a completely recreatable process to downgrade your Large NAND PS3 and restore Blu-Ray playback in the future.
Note: The location of saved files has changed, users of the older version of the tool should place their saved DRL files into a ‘PS3bluray’ folder in the root of the USB storage device for compatability with the new DRLcopy tool.

DRLcopy is a new PS3 tool that uses the output of the new version of DRLbackup (or properly located DRL backups from the previous version) and/or the derived DRL files from DRLgen to restore your blu-ray functionality after a firmware downgrade.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
We are still in need of a MKB v13 DRL1. If the highest movie you have played on your (non downgraded) PS3 is MKB v13, please create a backup of your DRL1 with DRLbackup v0.90 and email it to projectps3bluray@gmail.com
    Thank you!

Well a great gift this morning to the PS3 scene, as arodd of PSX-Scene has managed to restore Bluray again to “Phat” PS3 models that were lost @ time of downgrade (the issue was the loss of the DRL1/DRL2 files when the PS3 was downgraded).

The current method, posted below, is a bit complicated and requires the knowledge of how to use a PC with BluRay reader and HEX editor. You can however expect an “newb friendly” tool in the future though.

    To quote:

There is now a *hacky* method of doing a safe downgrade for users who don’t have the ability to do a backup of their drl files. This method can also be used to fix a ps3 with broken playback if you know the newest disc your ps3 has played.

If you go out and rent Inception(high mkb) and play this in your ps3 before downgrading this spreadsheet will be updated with the hex values of the DRL files to recover your blu ray playback.

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?…en&output=html

I don’t have the DRL data from inception yet, but this is a good candidate as it has one of the higher mkb versions. Once I get it I will add it to the spreadsheet. Let’s say that The Dark Knight was the highest MKB version that your PS3 has seen, than the below data would be used to restore your playback.

We have found out that the mkb from the title that updated your drl files can be used to restore your playback completely. The MKB data is located inside BD://AACS/MKB_RO.inf; If you use a PC BD drive from windows, mac, linux, etc. You can extract this data. We are working towards a method of doing this from the PS3 directly, but so far it appears GAMEOS may be blocking this file.

If this file is opened in a hex editor the beginning of the file contains the Type and Version record…

    ie: 10 00 00 0C 00 04(mkb version) 10 03 00 00 00 09 — The Dark Knight

    Then the HRL is listed….

    21 00 00 6C(record length) 00 00 00 07 00 00 00 07 00 09 FF FF 00 00 00 0B 00 00 FF FF 00 00 00 16 00 08 FF FF 00 00 00 21 00 03 FF FF 00 00 00 35 00 04 FF FF 00 00 00 4E 00 03 FF FF 00 00 00 54 00 03 FF FF 00 00 00 5E 2B 73 F1 7E 29 D4 04 7D 74 84 21 1E 3F 35 42 FE EB 3E B9 B1 63 B9 57 7D 86 AF F4 1A 02 A9 33 61 96 51 5A 67 0A 27 5C 8A — The Dark Knight

Following the HRL the actual DRL data begins.

    20 00 00 34(record length) 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 44 8F F5 FA B4 79 A3 FD FC B9 92 01 35 5C 21 3B D9 8C D3 20 06 B0 76 B5 46 92 1E 46 52 16 EE A5 5D 1E 7B 2D 02 C7 6D 0A — The Dark Knight

Combining the Type and Version Record with the DRL data gives you the hex contents of the proper DRL1/DRL2 files if this disc was the highest mkb version your ps3 has seen. This is called a Partial MKB.

    IE: 10 00 00 0C 00 04 10 03 00 00 00 09 20 00 00 34 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 44 8F F5 FA B4 79 A3 FD FC B9 92 01 35 5C 21 3B D9 8C D3 20 06 B0 76 B5 46 92 1E 46 52 16 EE A5 5D 1E 7B 2D 02 C7 6D 0A

The above hexed over your broken drl will restore your playback. This isn’t surefire if you’ve played another movie that is higher than inception or have updated your drl with a different movie that is the same mkb as inception. All in all you just need to know which newest disc you have played and that will give you the method to restore your playback.

FYI: Merry X-Mas! This is a gift to all! Thanks to HI3 for doing all of the leg work in understanding the different record types.

UPDATE: I received the following PM earlier today:

I’ve been working with Hi3 and the rest of the crew at #ps3bluray on Efnet and it’s urgent that the story about bluray playback problem being solved be removed because the research is not even CLOSE to final and the person who released the information was not authorized to do so.

So its not finalized yet and you should proceed to do this at your own risk. According to hi3, “If the traitor system is triggered it could lead to drive/host revocation en-masse in the future.”

According to PSGroove, a project is being worked upon to restore bluray functionality for PS3′s that have lost them, to quote:

As many of you already know, consoles are still being afflicted, with the loss of Blu-Ray playback, after downgrading. Chip makers and others, have claimed to have fixed the problem. However, there truly is no working fix at this time. A team of devs, called Project #PS3Bluray hopes to alleviate the problem with your help.

They are asking anyone with a PS3 to run an app they have developed, which will dump certain files related to Blu-Ray playback. It does not matter if the Blu-Ray problem is affecting your console or not, your files are still needed for analysis. Once analyzed, this should lead to a permanent Blu-Ray playback fix! For those that wish to help, please read on!

Please note that the files submitted for analysis do not contain any personal information or serial numbers and can’t be traced back to you. It is perfectly safe and anonymous.

    Download: ProjectPS3bluray-DRLbackup_v001.zip

Email files (created by app) to: ProjectPS3bluray@gmail.com

One of the most exciting recent developments is the ability to downgrade PS3s to previous firmwares. Unfortunately this has proven to have an unexpected side-effect for certain older (“phat”) PS3s: After downgrading, systems with 256MB of flash RAM (NAND) lose the ability to play Blu-Ray movies. Despite what you may have heard or what has been promised by certain unscrupulous sellers of USB-dongles, there is no fix at this time.

That’s why we have formed Project #PS3bluray and are trying hard to remedy this situation. However, we can’t do it without you. To find a solution, we need your help! We are not asking for any money; all we need are a few short moments of your time. This is your chance to actively contribute and support the community, by helping find a solution!

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
To solve the Blu-Ray problem, we need a file from inside the PS3′s NAND, specifically the DRL1/2-files located inside dev_flash3. DRL is short for “Drive Revocation List”; these files are reponsible for allowing Blu-Ray video playback.
In order to collect and analyze as many DRL files as possible from PS3s with working and non-working Blu-Ray playback, we have created an easy-to-use utility called DRLbackup, which automatically extracts DRL1/2 and creates a zip archive, which we’d then like you to send to us by email.
Please note that this file does not contain any personal information or serial numbers and can’t be traced back to you. It is perfectly safe and anonymous.

    USAGE:
    1. Start your PS3 in Jailbreak mode
    2. Put DRLbackup.pkg into the root of any FAT32 USB storage device and connect it to your PS3.
    3. Install DRLbackup.pkg (under Game / Install Package Files), then run it from the XMB.
    4. The screen will go black for a few seconds. When DRLbackup is done you will be returned to the XMB.
    5. Verify 3 files were written to the USB drive: Copies of DRL1/DRL2, and a .zip file named like: devflash3_.zip
    6. Send the zip-file to ProjectPS3bluray@gmail.com (keep the copies of DRL1/DRL2 as personal backup).

That’s it, thank you for your time!
If all goes well, this may lead to a way to return Blu-Ray playback capability to all PS3s that have lost it.

An anonymous user over at Elotrolado has released a patched version of Backup Manager to support the PSgroove with Hermes changes. We are now able to play PS3 backup s without having a disk inside the PS3 drive. You will need the new version of PSGroove flashed to your USB board.

To install you just need to overwrite the existing one, so you do not have to delete the old/currently installed backup manager.

I have not tested this yet so I can’t give you a 100% it will work, but according to reports it seems to be working, reply back and let me know your results.

The folks over at Demonhades have managed to connect the PS3 bluray drive to the PC and have the PC recognize it as well.

    To quote (translated):

“Our colleague has managed HadesTeam Calimba of connecting the PS3 BD player to the PC, as you all know the communication interface that uses the reader is bd flex belt so you do not have any type of connector for this work, so we have communicated BD reader to the pc to start to investigate more thoroughly. MysticHades has resurfaced an old hack that allowed the booting of PS3 games (originally found here). He has posted a video showing how this exploit works. This method only works with BluRay backups and NOT DVD. It does not work on all games.

Here is a rough translation of the tutorial, you can download all the needed files below:

Step 1: Install Ubuntu on your PS3 (or kubuntu)
Step 2: Install Windows XP on Ubuntu
Step 3: Install CloneCD on Windows XP and connect to network another PC so has seen in My Network Places. I do not know if AnyDVD HD is necessary, but I installed it for me
Step 4: Open CloneCD, select new image, insert the game, select “Protected PC Game”, change the extension to ISO.
Step 5: Ripper Blu-Ray on PC via network favorites.
Step 6: Burn with ImgBurn (or CloneCD) in 1X on the PC or has been ripped game

So what exactly is going on? This was the release post about this method via Elotrolado

PS3 backups load thanks to an exploit discovered when it is considered necessary is to upload a video showing the event.
My way of working will protect this exploit and not give details of how this occurs so that might not make the same mistakes of the past.
You have to patch both updates as other functions, the iso is not worth anyone … It requires a different process than those generated in linux are not worth keeping the encryption layer.
The exploit creates a CheckStop that generates a reboot and does not load everything back into memory but the function of pre patched disk and run the new copy.
    The models are tested 40/60/80.
The games tested are 3, Killzone 2, burnout paradise, pes2008.

Video of this exploit in action:

A more in-depth tutorial will be posted once we can get a better translation of the video. If you have a BluRay burner lying around and are willing to try, let us know and post your results.

celld0wn over at DemonHades have found the JTag port on PS3′s BluRay drive board.

    Rough translation from celld0wn below:

I found the JTag port for the Blu-ray Reader on the PlayStation 3. Last night after finishing the research meeting I went looking for information about BD integrated reader.

In and looking at the information that I found on the back of the plate reader I saw that there is no connector terminals, these terminals belong to a connector which connects ‘something’ via terminals and through the Internet I found the points used in a JTag, including the TDO, TDI, TMS etc.

Originally developed for printed circuit boards, it is currently used for test of submodules of integrated circuits, and is also useful as a mechanism for debugging embedded applications, as it provides a backdoor to within the system.

When used as a debugging tool, an in-circuit emulator that uses JTag as the transport mechanism allows the programmer to access the debugging module that is integrated into the CPU. The debug module enables the programmer to correct their errors and code logic of their systems.

There are consumer products that have a JTag port integrated, so that the connections are often available on the PCB as part of the prototype phase of the product. These connections can provide a simple way to reverse-engineer.

As you can see we have a door strike to try to get the firmware, decrypted data, and all that is able to control the Blu-ray reader.
