Even without a PS3, Graf_Chokolo has updated his PS3 linux. In the latest update he has managed to disable the PS3 HDD encryption, meaning that you are able to use your HDD in multiple PS3 consoles without format. Tools are available VIA Git below. (more…)

    4. choose the firmware your ps3 is on
    5. click patch
    6. you can find your pkg in the directory you extracted my tool
    7. ftp your backup (contents of PS3_GAME!) to /dev_hdd0/z/XXXXXX (chosen at step 2)

PS3HaX member Invi has made an awesome tutorial that will help those of us backing up our PS3 games, it shows us how to connect a 3.5″ harddrive and use it as internal storage on the PS3, here is a quote from his tutorial:

So This is my first tut for you guys. Since i had an 640 GB external Sata HDD Flying around i thought it would be cool if i could use it for my PS3 Instead of buying an new internal one. So heres what you need and how you go. The costs (at least for me) are low. I only had to buy an Sata Extension Cable which costs around 3 Euro. The other things i had all flying around at home. Also if im correct this should minimize the risk of getting a YLOD Cause your internal HDD cant overheat your PS3 anymore.

Recently, i reported here , that some people were having problems upgrading their HDD’s after they updated to 3.41, Sony previously refuted the claims, saying that the firmware wasn’t to blame and that it was the HDD’s that people were using.
CVG(Computer And Video Games), has reported that Sony has appologized for this problem and have released a new version of 3.41, they quoted Sony saying this:

For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: we are aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41.

To resolve these symptoms, we have released a new version of system software update 3.41 with a very minor change (the version number does not change) on August 2. If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

It happens every time a firmware is released, someone complains about the update causing problems and this update is no exception, forum member $n!pR mentioned, here on Wednesday, that those that updated, were having problems upgrading their hard drives, on Thursday Examiner.com confirmed this, here is short snippet from their site:

The problems being reports are the following: PS3 owners are unable to update their system to firmware 3.41, HDD upgrades aren’t being allowed, systems are crashing, and after installing a new HDD the system isn’t fully downloading the file and then prompts users with a message stating ‘no applicable data found’.

Sony did respond to online inquiries regarding this topic with this response:

“We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with upgrading Internal Hard Disc Drive (for PlayStation®3) on your PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. The information available to our Consumer Services Department does not suggest that this is a problem PlayStation(R) owners are likely to experience when upgrading the HDD with 3.41update. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence.

We ask that you update the previous HDD first to see if the update will go through. Then update from the thumb drive that is formatted in FAT 32 and has the 3.41 update downloaded.”

Now before everybody starts screaming, “But i have a 320GB HDD and i updated fine”, this dosnt affect you guys, it affects those who are tring to upgraded their HDD’s after updating the firmware.

Engadget has reported, via its Japanese site, that Sony will be releasing a Classic White version of their Slim PS3 Console, the SKU will have a 160GB HDD, these SKU’s will only be released in Japan, with no mention of a release in EU or US

As well as the White SKU, Sony will be releasing their consoles with higher capacity HDD’s, with the largest being 320GB, as youll notice in the images, no HDMI cable is present, these cables cost very little money, so Sony should be including them with all SKU’s.

boby2pc released a new version of FindSecData, a tool to help you uncripple the HDD features on a banned Xbox 360 console.   FindSecData will extract secdata.bin and filetable of NAND dump. It uses patch-latest secdata.bin method.

    What’s new/fixed (since v0.4):
    * added bypassing FF version records in filesystem (v0.41)
    * more accurate timestamp – used for visual purposes only (v0.41)
    * added parameter to show time part of timestamp in filetables (v0.42)
    * added support for large blocks (v0.5)
    * block rellocation support (v0.6)
    * now for 256MB and 512MB Jaspers is only needed dump of 0×600 blocks:
    nandpro lpt: -r256 raw.bin AE0 600
    or nandpro lpt: -r512 raw.bin AE0 600
so only about 1h dumping (v0.6)
    * protection to use large block controller with small 24MB dump (v0.61)

GodzIvan strikes again, this time with a diagram which simply write protects the NAND flash in the Xbox 360 by connecting WP to ground pin (if the flash type has different pinout, just find the datasheet to locate WP). This modification does not stop the ban from M$, but it prevents deletion of the HD installation certificates required by games which means you can still install them on the hard drive. In order to update the kernel this mod must be disabled; a simple switch solution comes to mind.” This is only a safegaurd against a ban, and only works on a unbanned 360 console, and prevents against future bans.

It seems like StreetskaterFU is at it again, SKFU posts on his blog that he ran across a bug on the PS3 NAT test that allows you to dump random data from HDD and RAM.

    To quote from his blog:

There’s a little “bug” in the PlayStation3′s NAT test which causes that you can dump random data from the HDD and RAM. Why exactly this appears; I don’t know, yet. But well, it is interesting.

The way how to do it is pretty simple. Set up Wireshark on the PC and activate ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Connect the PS3 with the PC via LAN and start Wireshark’s logging/sniffing feature on the LAN device. Now go to Settings on the PS3 and start a Internet Connection Test in the Network option. When the PS3 starts the NAT testing it will send default STUN packets together with several IP Fragments. Those both packet types will contain random data which the PS3 grabs from the HDD and/or RAM.

    There you go.
