Developers Grimm and Berion have created an application, which checks and PS3 firmware you have downloaded, it reads all information on the firmware and tells you whether the firmware is MFW or OFW, the application also works with PSP and PS Vita firmwares, though the main basis of the application is for PS3 firmwares, here is a quote from the ReadMe:

    Hello.

Custom Firmware Validator is a program designed mainly for veryfing downloaded or manually patched firmwares for PS3. This aplication compares checksums from the database with those which are being calculated on the currently open file. If at least one would match, the following things will appear: the name of the firware and its short description, the option to show the list of additional functions and the option to visit the author’s webpage, also one could copy a file onto USB with the proper directory stuctrure and its name (PS3, PSP, PSV).

Databases are external, written in the stardard XML and UTF-8 coded, so everyone can edit them and propose any possible corrections, what we encourage you to do.

We prepared three different bases for the program (the one for PS3 is loaded by default, but one can choose others from the option menu):
    - The first one for PS3 (currently with all CFW/OFW (*.pup) and upadate packages *.pkg for Rebug and TB dongle).
    - The other ones function as examples and need to be completed.

Please be advised: in order for Custom Firmware Validator to work properly Microsoft .NET Framework 4 at least ver. 4.0 is required. the program works on windows 7 - was not tested on XP, Vista or 8 (Developers/Consumers Preview).

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do you plan to make databases updates?
A: Yes, but only the one for PS3. In this aspect we count on the community’s involvement. ;]

Q: Do you plan to release program updates?
A: Sure, but it depends on whether the submitted errors could be verified and whether we have ideas for new functions.

Q: What checksums are generated and will you add new in the future?
    A: CRC32 (CRC32b), MD5, SHA1, SHA2-224, SHA2-256, SHA2-386 and SHA2-512. In future, probably SHA3. Others not, for the time being.

Q: Can I use CFV in order to generate checksums from other files than consoles’ firmware?
A: Yes, basically the source of no importance, because the program reads descriptions and checksums which can be freely edited and picked from the options menu.

    Q: Is CFV legal?
A: Yes, it is, it doesn’t contain any keys/hashes used to sign files.

Q: Could I modify my console using the program?
    A: Nah…

Most of you think of a Backup manager when the name ‘Rogero’ is mentioned, but the cool PS3 Dev also creates MFW/CFW, which is dedicated for those of you that downgrade, but can be used even if you aren’t a downgrader, here is a quote from the source:

    Usage / Compatibility:

    • - Can be used for Downgrade directly using a hardware flasher like Progskeet / E3 Flasher / Teensy++, etc…
    • - Can be used for normal system update like any other CFW/MFW from XMB or from Recovery Menu.

    Internal Structure:
    New Features:

    • - Built-in system version spoof to 4.11 to prevent accidental system updates (won’t allow going online in any way)
    • - NoBD Patch to allow installing it with the Blu-Ray drive disconnected (especially for downgrading purposes)
    • - Have other fixes that prevents the Black screen or Payload loading problems encountered on some PS3 systems.

    Standard Features:

    • - Kmeaw patched Lv2 with necessary patches to allow Peek/Poke support (same games compatibility as Kmeaw CFW)
    • - LV1 Checks Disabled to bypass the Syscon hashes for downgraded consoles.
    • - Privacy Patch applied to block communications with all Sony servers.
    • - Custom Boot Logo.
    • - built-in “Heavy Rain” dynamic theme.

This is a better optimized version of the previous MFW released, This one is a Custom firmware
built manually by patching and packing the files and the final PUP package using the well known
“failoverflow” public set of tools and having ”Kmeaw” as the base firmware unlike it’s previous
version which was a Modified firmware built using the famous MFW builder application and using
an OFW3.55 as the base firmware.

    History:

After several days and more testing of the first MFW released for downgrading from 3.70->3.55
I had some users feedback from #progskeet-support that some PS3 machines are having either
the Registry Corrupted/Blue Screen or just a Black Screen after downgrade that required re-installing
the MFW from Recovery Menu or reflashing the NOR in some cases.

Further research about the donwgrade V2 patches and the no_check.PUP with some more testing
showed that a Kmeaw based LV2 seems to have better compatibility with the Downgrade patches
applied to the NOR image then a MFW built with a patched LV2, so I decided to build a new version
manually which is a custom firmware that combines Kmeaw LV2 patches with Dospiedras Lv1 no-check
patches and having the minimal/necessary set of patches to preserve the best overall stability.

Thanks to the all the beta testers especially Blakcat & Marlboro1 :)

Demonhades has just released a video demoing you the JFW-DH working on 3.56 firmware.Check it out below:

Hi hell, here I leave a video that shows the installation of 356 DH JFW MA on a 355, this version is created only for users locked into a 356 (base) that can not drop below the 356 and therefore can not enjoy the scene.

The reason why you can not downgrade the 356, is that apart from the 356 it incorporates a second updater which is the preparatory 360.Este then would be the new way (updater2) mode unusable old (355) is why not recognize any update below.

It’s supposed to be given to how to do down at 356 after the DH JFW 356 MA, but when tested it is only possible with a flash out of 356.

The video shows how to use various applications such as:

    NES-Emulator

    Showtime-media player

    -Multimar

What is not allowed to peek / poke the moment, but the pkg type psn games if the charges.

Again, this is a special version to help people who can not lose more than 356, so you need a flasher to install it and enjoy the scene, so abstain from stupid comments about that why not do it in 355, etc.

Thanks to Alejandro, Jaicrab, Calimba and Varicella for collaboration in this custom help, the output of this custom and delayed a bit because right now we are saturated with the 341 and prefer to postpone a little more the 356 (to address and incorporate same graph as his brother 341)

1saludo and as I always say, this video is unique demonhades.org, this may not be copied in places eol or copied only to criticize and make visits to it (which is alluded to by whoever)

PS3Hax member, Rogero, has released Rogero  CFW version 2. This CFW is for people that have downgraded their consoles. This new release is much more stable and has the famous Kmeaw CFW as the “base”.

So DemonHades and jaicrab along with their group of developers have been working for quite a while on a 3.41 CFW, which implements the Cobra payload, it also allows for playing games directly from the XMB, without the need of a backup manager, this FW was only for PS3 consoles on firmware 3.41, but does this new post from the source, mean it will also work on firmware 3.55 or even firmware 3.56 ???

Here is a quote of the post in question, translation by PS3HaX member CaptainCPS-X(Thank you).

Before reading any further, if you’re looking for something related to FW 3.60 or PSN, don’t bother reading

Hello friends, as we said JFW DH was going to work only on FW 3.41, well now we bring JFW DH 3.56.

    - At this moment, the new JFW DH can only be installed over FW 3.55 or over 3.56 by patching part of the update with a hardware flasher (I recommend teensy, is the cheapest and easier to handle).

What can be done with JFW DH 3.56…

    - Launch homebrew
    - Loading of backups without managers (multiMAN)

What can’t be done at this moment…

    - Once on 3.56 you can’t downgrade, due to the new update system that we explained some time ago.
    - The Grid cannot be used (for now).
    - Downgrade is only possible with a flasher, but if you enter factory mode you will not be stuck anymore, you will be able to exit…we have not touched the QA yet, but it could be a way out .

Remember Rogero? The man behind Rogero Backup manager? Well he has released some information about the downgrade from 3.70 by Dospiedras and states that any MFW that does not have LV1.self file patched to Disable all checks will result in a brick. Now he has released his own MFW that fixes this trophy error.

Last night I had the chance to try and downgrade a Slim Ps3 (JSD-001 board with Spansion NOR) version 3.70 to CFW 3.55 using Dospiedra’s downgrade v2 patches.

I managed to get a clean dump of the NOR using my ProgSkeet (latest QT port used), created a patched Downgrade.bin image

using the 6 patched files from Dospiedra and a hex editor, then I flashed the image to the PS3 NOR, dumped the NOR another

time and verified that all was written fine.

Then I continued with the normal downgrade procedure, go into service mode, update using the 3.55_no_check.PUP, then exit

service mode and all was good, it was back into CFW 3.55.

Here the problems started, I tried to start a game and I got the famous Trophy error, so I decided to update it to my

personal Modified Firmware, so I started the update and after installing the firmware, the PS3 turned off by itself,

I tried to turn it on again, It turned on for almost 2 or 3 seconds then turned off completely ( No Screen Output, No Red Led either )

so I knew-ed at this point that the PS3 was Bricked

N.B: this was never mentioned in any of the downgrade tutorials floating on the net, although this is a very important point

to warn the users who are downgrading their Ps3 machines not to update using usual Modified firmwares unless the firmware

have the LV1.self file patched to Disable all checks, anything else will result into a Bricked PS3, and this is not good at

all especially if the Hardware flasher used to downgrade was removed from the Ps3′s NOR or Nand Flash.

After doing some research and discussing the issue with my friend eussNL <- a wiki by himself

I realized what happened to the Ps3, after the downgrade procedure, the machine’s syscon still had a version > 3.55

(3.56 or higher) and this needs a Patched LV1.self (checks disabled) in the NOR for the PS3 to be able to boot fine, and when

I updated it to my own MFW, the LV1.self file in the NOR was replaced with a non-patched version (checks enabled) and the PS3

detected the higher syscon version (3.56+) and Bricked.

To Fix it, I had to re-flash the NOR again with the patched Downgrade.bin image (to get rid of the patched LV1.self)

then the Ps3 was fixed and booting fine again.

At this point, the Ps3 was working again, but the Trophy problem was always there, so I prepared another Modified firmware with

3.70 spoof, Privacy Patch and this time the LV1.self Checks Disabled

(the patches were provided by eussNL too so Credits here goes to him),

then while still having Progskeet soldered to the NOR flash, I updated the Ps3 with the new MFW, everything

went fine, and it rebooted fine into the XMB, did some tests and the Trophy problem was gone for good and all games working fine.

For all the users who had successfully downgraded their PS3 machines to 3.55 again, I share with you my MFW with Lv1 Checks patched to bypass the 3.56+ syscon version and prevent any brick after updating to it, and to get rid of the annoying Trophy problem encountered after the usual downgrade procedure.

So as most of you know, the PS3 Scene just recently celebrated the one year anniversary of the PS3 being hacked/jailbroken, many, many things have happened in that short year, many changes and break throughs, i have two reasons for creating such a FAQ, the obvious being all the changes, PS3 owners just getting into the scene, need help and guidance, i also seen a failed attempt at a F.A.Q on another site and i thought that mistake needed to be rectified, with a proper F.A.Q :)

    (Q) Why Would I Hack/Jailbreak My PS3 ?
    (A) Hacking your PS3, gives you so many new option’s, you will be able to use emulators, homebrew apps and game backups as well as being able to use Linux, after Sony removed the function in firmware 3.21.

    (Q) Is there a firmware my PS3 should be on ?
    (A) It seems the preferable firmwares are 3.15(For the real OtherOS), 3.41(The original “Jailbreak” firmware) and 3.55(the first CFW PS3), 3.55 is the favourite and most used.

    (Q) What Firmwares cannot be hacked yet ?
    (A) 3.56 to 3.70 are unhackable at the moment, perhaps it will remain that way, or perhaps we will see a break through in the future, only time will tell.

    (Q) But when i bought my PS3, the firmware was above 3.55/My family member updated my console when i was out :( , how can i have Homebrew ?
    (A) All hope isn’t lost, you can downgrade your consoles firmware with devices like progskeet, at the moment, this is rather a tedious process, involving soldering several wires to your PS3, but in the future we will have solderless models of these products, for information on how to downgrade, check this thread:
Noob Tutorial: How to downgrade/flash your PS3 from firmware 3.70 to 3.55 via ProgSkeet/Teensy++ and install 3.55 Kmeaw CFW

    (Q) Downgrading was a pain, i don’t want to go through that again, is there a way i can protect my PS3 from accidental upgrading ?
    (A) You can use Team Rebugs firmware spoofer, it spoofs the firmware, so that when someone attempts to update the PS3, via internet or disc, the PS3 tells them they are already on the highest firmware, as an extra precaution, you should remove your consoles access to the PS3, when you are not around, you can grab your spoofer, from the offical Rebug site here.

    (Q) What other firmwares can i hack/jailbreak my PS3 on ?
    (A) 2.76, 3.01, 3.15, 3.21, 3.40, can all be “hacked” using the PS Jailbreak USB Dongle or equivalent variants, information on the useable devices, can be found on my old F.A.Q, which you can view here.

    (Q) CFW/MFW Or Dongle ?
    (A) CFW/MFW is the way to go, dongles are more or less dead, apart from the Cobra USB dongle, but it too will become obsolete as its features get implemented into CFW/MFW, also with CFW/MFW, you do not need to do the start-eject combo that is needed with the dongles.

    (Q) How do i install CFW ?
    (A) If you aren’t already on 3.55, you will need to update to the official Sony firmware, then install a CFW via recovery, Pirate wrote a great guide, which you can read here:
[Tutorial] How to play and install Backups with Kmeaw CFW+PSN without risk of brick or itskamel’s NOOB JAILBREAK GUIDE
If you wish to stay on official firmware 3.41, the same method applies, but you will need to grab Team Rebugs 3.41 CFW, which you can find here.
Here is a video of Kmeaw being installed via the Recovery Method.

    (Q) I see many different CFW/MFW, which one should i chose ?
    (A) As i stated earlier, Kmeaw is the most popular CFW/MFW but there are other versions and you can take your pick, all installed the same way as the above method:
    Team Rebugs 3.41/3.55 CFW
    BobbyBlunt’s PS3HaX MFW
    Thelostdeathknight’s PS3HaX MFW
    varaques MFW
    bitsbubbas NFW
    bitsbubbas NFW With Cobra Implimentation

    (Q) I want to test a different CFW/MFW, is it ok to install a CFW on top of another CFW.
    (A) If you have Kmeaw installed, you can install Rebug over the top of it, but if you decide you don’t like Rebug and want to go back to Kmeaw, it is advised that you install the 3.55 Official Firmware, then install Kmeaw, as a precaution, i would advise that is done with all CFW changes

    (Q) Ok so i have CFW installed, how do i run homebrew ?
    (A) You will see in the game section, you will see “Install Package Files”, you will be able to install all your homebrew and backup managers from there, just a note though, the PKG files that you are installing, need to be on the root of your FAT32 formatted thumbdrive/external HDD.

    (Q) Now that i have updated to 3.55 CFW, is there a list of working homebrew app’s/games ?
    (A) Here are a few links:
    Homebrew Games Collection(Maintained by manster)
    Homebrew Emulator Collection(Maintained by Thelostdeathknight)
    Homebrew Application Collection(maintained by GregoryRasputin(me)

    (Q) How do i play my backups ?
    (A) You will need a backup manager, the following are available(We recommend the PS3HaX endorsed multiMAN):
multiMAN For help, check the (Support Forum) Grab BDEMU2 here.
    Rogero
    Gaia
    Iris
    Open Manager(Firmware 3.41 Only)
    Hermes Manager(Firmware 3.41 Only)

    (Q) I have my games backed up, i now want to play online, how do i do that ?
    (A) Currently there is no way to access the PSN server to play online, even if a new CFW came out, Sony would block PSN again with a new OFW, so your only real option, if you want both homebrew and PSN, is to have two PS3′s

    (Q) What are my storage options for backing up games ?

(A.1) You can backups certain games to CD/DVD/BD disc’s, read here for more information.
(A.2) You can install games on the PS3′s internal HDD or use an External USB HDD, which needs to be formatted to FAT32, you can also use a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive, note that with FAT32 you are limited to games with single files under 4GB, if you prefer all your games to be on the internal HDD, you can get up to 1TB 2.5? HDD, or you can use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT method and have your internal HDD on the outside of the machine, the benefit of this, is that you can use 3.5? Sata and IDE HDD’s as internal storage.

Some more PS3 HDD Information submitted by ieder-zijn-meis(Thanks again)
    - maximum height is 9,5mm (many 2.5? drives above 640GB are too high too fit inside)
    - maximum PS3 filesystem is 1TB (512KB block size)
    - maximum FAT32 theoretical size is 8TB, practical limit on the PS3 is 2TB
    - 7200rpm can be used, as well as Flashdrives (although the 1/5th lower loadingtime of GTA5 can be considered too low to justify the higher pricetag of SATA Flashdrives.
    - SATAII-300 can be used, although it will work on SATA1-150 speed interface.
    - If using external 3.5? drives hooked up to the internal SATA, you’ll need an external powersupply (some drivebays include them).
    - If on low budget or you like DIY: use a normal extension (male to female) SATA cable (and make sure it doesn’t get loose) and recycle the case + powersupply of an external USB harddisk (without using the USB connection/conversion).
    - Don’t use RAID or SAN drives with (e)SATA interface, just a plain single drive with a bare SATA connector (many controllers don’t work without drivers/software).
    - Games can be hardcoded for BluRay speeds (9MB/s) so sticking a 85~220MB/s harddrive inside will not speedup everything/allways (but most do).
    - If you plan on exchanging the drive, download the full PUP of your FW you are using and put it on an USB Mass Storage Device formatted with FAT32 in PS3UPDATEPS3UPDAT.PUP and disconnect the LAN before re powering the PS3 (or you’ll bound to end up with the latest (3.55 now) unjailbreakable/undowngradable version).
    - Use a good fitting X screwdriver, the screws fitted to the HD<>tray are made of very soft aluminum.

Here is a tutorial, by forum member Invi, on how to an External IDE HDD Case and use it as Internal Storage:
HowTo: Use an external IDE HDD Case to connect an Internal 3,5″ Sata HDD as PS3 HDD.

An image of the Xecuter PS3 HDXT.

Videos of different HDD expansion options.

    (Q) Now that i am on 3.55, can i install Linux ?
    (A) Follow this thread.

    (Q) Ok im fed up with using my thumb drive, is there a way to download apps directly to the PS3.
    (A) Yes,you will need to instal “Package Installer”, then you will be able to FTP the apps to the “packages” folder on your PS3, you can find more about that here.

    (Q) Ok so i have backed up a game, i want to save that game to my computer as an extra backup, or i want to mod the game, how do i transfer it from my PS3.
    (A) There are two methods, FTP, there are three of those at the moment:
    PS3 FTP Server by CJCP
    blackb0x FTP Server by blackb0x
    OpenPS3FTP(Probably the most stable)
    Alternatively you can use
    Comgenies Awesome Filemanager
    or
    Simple Filemanager
multiMAN also has FTP and Filemanger options
if you cant use FTP, or have an External HDD, Comgenies Filemanager is the best choice.

    (Q) I just bought a new game, tried to play it, but it says i need to update my firmware, what do i do ?
    (A) Unfortunately, newer games being released, will be unplayable on current CFW’s, you may be lucky and get a patch, but the chances of those are getting slimmer as time goes on, so the only options you are left with, are update or buy a new PS3, this is the sad situation of the scene, until the scene developers release a new CFW, you will be unable to play the newer games you bought.

    (Q) I want to be able to create my own Homebrew, is it possible.
(A.1) Yes, using the Open Source PS3 SDK, named PSL1GHT, you can create Homebrew, PSL1GHT was created by AerialX, read about it here.

(A.2) You can use the Official Sony SDK, it is reported that this is better for creating homebrew, than the open source version.

    (Q) I backed up a few of my movies to .AVI and .MKV formats, but when i try and play them through Showtime, or stream them via PS3Media Server, i get a Cinavia warning, is there any way past this ?
    (A) You can install this app:
Disable Cinavia Installer (3.41 & 3.55)(By Team Rebug)

    (Q) Can play PS2/PS1 backups on my Jailbroken PS3 ?
(A.1) You can use this method, it lets you use Swap Magic to load PS2 backups on your PS3, the only consoles allowed, are those that are Backwards Compatible, this option also works on a non Jailbroken PS3, even with firmware 3.70
(A.2) You can use the Cobra USB dongle, to play PS1 or PS2 backups on your Jailbroken PS3, it is compatible with firmwares 3.41 and 3.55.
(A.3) You can use this method to play PS1 backups on firmware 3.41 and 3.55.

Alright so we have another round of unofficial PS3HAX themed firmware for everyone to enjoy.  We have an upate to BobbyBlunt’s FW release which adds the Cinavia patch to his 3.55 OOS++ MFW and we have the release of TLDK’s noob friendly version.

The main differences between them are subtle.  The basic has a normal theme, no Linux support, and no spoof.   a Dynamic theme, spoofed to 3.66 and Linux without the trophy errors for the OOS++ version. They both have their own coldboots as well. Also, these were two completely separate collaborations. More about them below.

Quote about Unofficial PSHaX 3.55 MFW Basic

So for the past few days i have been working on user friendly PS3HaX themed MFW and after a couple days of testing I have decide it was ready to be released. This Firmware has been tested on a CECHE01 (Phat PS3 256mb nand), a CECHL01 (Phat PS3 16mb nor), and a slim model PS3 with the MFW working perfectly on all three. I made this to a be n00b friendly version for those who are just looking to enjoy GameOS Homebrew and PS3 games. It also has Cinavia removed

Quote from BobbyBlunt about Unofficial PSHaX 3.55 MFW OOS++

These are the links for version 2 (thanks again pbanj for the filesonic mirror) I say use this at your own risk because of the nature of these patches. Cinavia should be disabled except for back up BD and AVCHD movies. The same disclaimer applies I am not responsible for bricks. Everything is the same as the original except for the new patches

Alright we have been hearing about JFW-DH for a while now and a lot of speculation has been going on.  Well very soon it will be in a beta form for testers.  How do you get to be a tester, well you have to be a Demon friend on DH.org and meet the requirements for the group your ps3 falls into.  The return of online will be the openpsTore which is where you will be able to find and download homebrew for your ps3.  Also it looks like people will have to wait until October, if you don’t qualify to be a beta tester,  because they have said if the beta gets leak they will brick the tester who leaked it and anyone who is not a tester using it. The anti leak measure will not be in the final release. Also do not trust any leaked beta’s you find.

    Quote from DH.org:

Hello friends of the Community DHorg, we know the impatience of many to JFW-DH.Teneis expected to know that the work we are doing is very tiring and among all those who compose the JFW-DH Team want to open the period beta testers.

    The requirements are:

The beta test shall undertake not to publish the beta, and have a mechanism that anti leaks, this means that not only would find the informer, but you use it the users activate the safety mechanism to make them shiny bricks (Forewarned is a traitor)
The beta testers inform the organizer of the bugs to be repaired.
The testing period will be from 2 weeks to address everything that contains the JFW-DH and so do not leave nothing out.

The estimated date for the publication of the JFW-DH is October 1, 2011 (after two weeks testing the above)

Since we at PS3HaX like to share our members hard work and encourage our members to continue to do more work. I thought i would share with you a PS3HaX themed MFW made possible by many great members of this forum!!

Quote from BobbyBlunt, the PS3HaX member who brought this MFW together:

I decided to release one of my pups. I haven’t had a chance to play with it but I did install it and had some others test it. It is a collaboration effort of things HaX. Coldboot was from a HaX member that I can’t remember so if you made it claim it and I will give you credit. Annelies theme, patched LV1 and LV2. OtherOS++ support and a lot of other goodies. It is much like Varaques MFW to be honest except with my own tweaks. Thanks Varaques for the tip about SS in LV1 patching to stop the trophy issues. I am unsure about QA flagging (I never bothered with it and gitbrew removed the task for it) It is also 3.66 spoofed.

    Thanks to:
    Annelies for the theme
    Anonymous developers for MFW builder
    Unkown for the coldboot
Gliitch and myself for the coldboot sound
    Varaques for the SS tip
Kamel for being my other guinea pig.
Gitbrew and Glevland for all the new tasks.
Everyone that makes this scene so great.
And of course ps3hax for being the best ps3 site on the net.

Any issues please let me know so I can remedy them

This MFW is created by members of PS3Hax but is not officially endorsed.

There seems to be a problem with this pup and recovery. If you are experiencing an issue download boot_gameos.pkg and reboot.pkg. Run bootgameos.pkg then when returned to the xmb run reboot.pkg. Your recovery issue will be solved. If you wish to install linux you will also need the boot_otheros.pkg, but that will make recovery run as petitboot again. These packages can be found in our download section!!

We at PS3Hax like to highlight what our community puts out on the scene. PS3Hax member, Varaques, has created his own unique CFW with the MFW tools. There probably quite a few variants/clones out there but be very careful on what PUP you install as you might end up staring at a bricked PS3.

Here are some of the features of Varaques 3.55 CFW:

    • Other+Os Support
    • Q&A Flag Support
    • Custom Boot Logo
    • Custom Theme
    • 3.66 Spoofed
    • LV1 & LV2 Patched
    • Run Unsigned PKG’s & More

You can grab the downloads below, reply back and let Varaques know what you think of it :)

It wasn’t that long ago that the PS3MFW team, were forced to take their work down due to a DMCA enforcement, but that hasn’t stopped them working hard on a new release of their popular, PS3MFW, thanks to the ps3-hacks.com admin a new website was created, that will be safe from the clutches of SCEA, where PS3 developers will be free to publish their work, this is where the PS3MFW team have released their new version of PS3MFW Builder, here are some of the changes that they have made:

    • - patch_privacy.tcl –

PS3 collects a large amount of personal information while it’s operating. Additionally personal information is sent to many domain names when internet access is enabled (unrelated to PSN access). This task prevents PS3 from sending any data to the domain names you select.

    • - broken_bluray.tcl –

Allows you to remove Blu-Ray firmware installation so that the MFW can be installed without a working Blu-Ray drive. This is potentially dangerous if used on a PS3 with a working drive, and should only be used if the drive is broken.

    • - spoof_version.tcl –

Allows changing the firmware version the PS3 appears to be on, similar to the rebug spoofer.

    • - change_coldboot_files.tcl –

Advanced users only: Allows changing the sound played and image shown during the boot process. Caution: If improper files are used, this can cause a “brick”.

    • - change_ssl_cer.tcl –

    Allows changing of SSL certificates.

    • - change_theme.tcl –

Can be used to replace the default “Airbrush” theme with another theme file (.p3t format).

    • - patch_shop.tcl –

Creates firmware to transform demo PS3s (the units used in stores) into full retail PS3s, without the need for service mode!

Here is a quote from the release notes:

Today we are proud to present our second official release, PS3MFW Builder v0.2. Just as the previous release, v0.2 is intended for firmwares 3.10 and above. Extensive testing of the framework and tasks has been successful with all versions above 3.10, the majority of tasks are also successful below 3.10. PS3MFW Builder v0.2 contains many new features that further improve usability. For this new version, PS3MFW Builder and the tasks have been moved to seperate repositories on git-hacks.com. Builder 0.2 adds new functions to aid in the creation of tasks, with 2 bug fixes. For programmers, the new core offers more flexibility for tasks and allows to manipulate the user interface better.

Furthermore, several exciting new tasks have been created. The most interesting one is a new privacy patch, which keeps PS3 from sending personally identifiable information to many configurable domain names: After jailbreak became available for PS3, reverse engineers discovered that the PS3 collects a multitude of personal information without your knowledge, such as such as your TV model, a list of all usb devices (including product IDs) you ever plugged into your PS3, usage statistics, which games and media you play and more.

The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) specifically allows for consumers to circumvent technological protection measures in order to protect their privacy. Even though there was little doubt concerning the legality of PS3MFW Builder before because it in itself does not circumvent any technological protection measures, this new feature makes using it inside the USA fully DMCA compliant.

Additionally, PS3MFW Builder v0.2 allows for several new customizations, including a firmware version spoofer, a way to edit the look and sound of the boot sequence by inserting your own coldboot files, and a task to replace the default “Airbush” XMB theme. Now it can also create modified firmwares that can be installed on PS3s with broken Blu-Ray drives as well as create firmwares that can convert demo (kiosk/shop) units into regular retail PS3s! A bug that prevented USB storage devices from being shown under Game Data Utility was fixed.

The new PS3MFW Builder v0.2 and tasks can be found at www.git-hacks.com/ps3mfw

To use PS3MFW Builder, the following is needed:

-The latest version of ps3tools (not older than 25 March 2011), found on git-hacks.com

    -Tcl/Tk 8.5 ( http://www.tcl.tk/software/tcltk/8.5.tml )

    -rcomage for some tasks

The PS3MFW guys have just released their first version of PS3MFW, the app that lets you create MFW (Modified Firmware), the way you want it, here is a quote from the read me:

    ————
    INTRODUCTION
    ————

For years, the security system of PS3 remained unbreached because Sony had a
very good defense mechanism: Consumers could use it for more than just gaming
by installing Linux via the “Other OS” feature. Therefore there was little
motivation for security researchers to investigate the PS3. However, then Sony
(or SCE, SCEA, SCEE or whatever, we aren’t exactly sure what is going on there
anymore) made an unprecedented move: Not only did they introduce a new PS3
model that no longer allowed the installation of an Other OS, but with a
firmware “upgrade” they removed the capability from previously sold consoles.
While removing advertised features from a product (several years after its
purchase!) is blatantly unlawful, having highly paid lawyers apparently allows
you to get away with it- in a legal sense.

But when the law fails to protect the people, then some of those people, being
clever and resourceful, help themselves. And that is what happened here. Sony
    sunk its own battleship.

PS3MFW is the next step in the process of returning to consumers control over
their own hardware. Your PS3 belongs to you. You didn’t lease it, and you
signed no contract when you purchased it. It is your right to use it however
you choose. It is your responsibility to do so within the legal boundaries.

PS3MFW allows you to tailor your PS3′s firmware to your specific needs, giving
you a level of control you previously lacked. PS3MFW is open source. That
means it is completely transparent, and anyone with the necessary programming
knowledge can help to improve it and create new plugin tasks.

It is with great pleasure and joy that we are now able to present you with the
first public release of PS3MFW Builder. A lot of hard work went into this
during the past five weeks, by some incredibly dedicated and inspired people.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed, the people who got this
project underway, and those who did all the programming and testing.

PS3MFW Builder v0.1 has been successfully tested on all major PS3 hardware
revisions, and in conjunction with OFW 3.10 - 3.55. It is NOT compatible with
    OFW 3.56.

Remember that this is only the very first release of PS3MFW Builder, version
0.1. With your support and feedback, we intend to create the definitive PS3
firmware solution that makes all other closed-source custom firmwares obsolete.

PS3MFW Builder is not distributed with any program code copyrighted by third
    parties.

    PS.
KevinButler, you sunk your own battleship.
