PS3Hax member aldostools has released a nice homebrew tool he is calling: CreatePS3EXTRA

What does it do? To quote:

It scans for the PKG, MP4 and P3T files copied to each game folder or its PS3_UPDATE folder, and store them under a PS3_EXTRA structure. When a game is mounted with multiMAN, there will be 2 BD icons on the XMB: one disc for the game itself and another with PKGs, MP4 and P3T. It should make it easier to install the game patches, DLC, fixes, and related videos.

A PS3 Dev by the name of ps3hen has shown a video of him installing PKG’s on 4.0 OFW, here is the video followed by a quote from the dev.

Note: This modification does not allow the installation / usage of unsigned content / PS3 homebrew etc. This is purely a convenience hack and is aimed for use by those who have hardware flashers which allow dual boot.

After technodon’s work creating a modified kiosk dev_flash which lets you install retail signed package files. The restrictions of having to use kiosk firmware inspired me to find a way to add “Install Package Files” for retail firmware.

This is hack does the following things:

    • adds “★ Install Package Files” and “★ /app_home/PS3_GAME/” to “GAME” on the XMB (allowing the user to install retail package files anytime they want)
    • adds other debug functions which are small but still there
    • does not give access to “★ Debug Setting” (reasons for this are explained below)

    Installation instructions:

This installation procedure is the similar to technodon’s original dev_flash hdd swap procedure

For this you will need two hard drives a e3 flasher or similar device to downgrade your PS3 (assuming that you’re on firmware 4.00 and you have an e3 flasher)

    • downgrade to 3.55 using the downgrade tools from e3 (Of course when downgrading to 3.55 make sure you use a different hdd than the hdd which you were using 4.00)
    • once booted back into the xmb turn off the console
    • swap hard drives turn on the system, press the PS button and you will be asked to reinstall the firmware
    • place the pup file from the e3 downgrade tools in the normal PS3/UPDATE usb folder and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the firmware
    • then install dev_blind.pkg & Blackb0x FTP from install packages
    • run dev_blind then BlackB0x and FTP into the console
    • goto /dev_blind delete everything and replace them with the customised dev_flash
    • press the ps button and the console should reboot and and ask to reinstall the firmware again, switch off the console and swap the hard drive back
    • turn on the console press the ps button twice
    • the console should boot back into 3.55 Rogero
    • goto system update and install 4.00 OFW
    • once installed turn the console off again and swap hard drives back and you should boot into a modified 4.00 retail firmware.

My package (Click to download) includes:

    • My modded dev_flash
    • OFW 4.00 PS3UPDAT.PUP

P.S. BTW the “nas_plugin.sprx” in this dev_flash has not been altered to achieve “Install Package Files”. Also for those who will analyze my modded dev_flash, you will find that I have used debug .sprx files from the a debug 4.00 pup.

P.P.S. I originally intended to get “★ Debug Settings” to work with this. But usage of “debug settings” required the ps3 to use a debug vsh.self, and that crashes the ps3 when trying to load applications (I did some other things as well to prevent the PS3 from giving me a RSOD when I swapped the vsh.self files, I’m not detailing it in public because I don’t want Sony to patch it).

PS3Hen has released an .pup file, which makes the above process much easier, here is a quote from his post:

Before I move, on status update on getting “Debug Settings” on OFW 4.00. Its still a bit buggy, so more work needed there.

I’ve managed to put my efforts into a .pup file, which should make the installation of my mod much easier.

Also today I was on another site where user DeViL303 had released a beta of his XMB File Manager (substitute for Install Package Files, but a lot better) and DeViL303 theorized a FW 4.00 port was possible. So I took on the role on making the port for FW 4.00 and after posting it on that thread I integrated it into my firmware. So now I’ve upgraded my firmware mod and put into a .pup.

Here’s some new installation instructions(much shorter, I know isn’t great):

    1/Be on a firmware 3.55 or less
2/Install the .pup through the XMB (Make sure you have a working hardware flasher as there is no other way to downgrade)

Remember only retail signed .pkg can be installed with this. Have fun.

The PS Vita launched yesterday in Japan, we posted about it here, that was exciting news for all those standing in line at 7AM on a cold Japanese morning, those in the hacking community came to a bit of a snag, in that the newer PKG’s have had their AES Keys changed, here is a quote from well known hacker SKFU:

I just got my tried to unpack the Twitter application for PS VITA and sadly I have to say that the AES key for PKG encryption and decryption changed.

The PKG’s I used for my testings were pretty old and the key update was expected.
Nevertheless it’s a bit disappointing but a new nice challange :)

The PS3 can decrypt the new packages on firmware 4.00 which contains the new PS VITA PKG AES key for the PS3 <--> PS VITA content exchange feature. This means we can decrypt and get the content of the PS VITA PKG files via a 4.00 PS3. Sadly there’s no solution to re-encrypt it again, yet.

Let the games begin! (again…) :D

We recently posted about SKFU’s PS Vita Firmware extractor and now we have even more PS Vita developing news, last night SKFU released his PS Vita PKG extractor application, here is a quote from the developers blog:

After two sleepless nights and great help of iQD and PS3-690, finally the PS VITA .pkg xTractor application 1.00 is finished.

This program can decrypt & extract PS VITA game package (.pkg) files.

To use the program you need to place the PS VITA .pkg AES key in the same dir as the executable.

Funny as SONY is, they probably were to lazy to think of a new key and just used *hehe*, the PSP .pkg AES key.

Information tab not finished, yet. It will be completed in next version.

So just put the PSP .pkg AES key in hex syntax in aes.key file in the same folder and you are ready to go.

Another thing worth to mention is that thanks to GregoryRasputin the PS VITA developer wiki is now online.

For now it’s near empty but I hope it will fill fast:

This is a spanish program created by Alegoría. It is said that this program lets you create PKGs.

We inform this new application is being developed by Allegory to easily create pkgs.
The idea is to convert the physical format games DG HG property to run directly from the HDD without having to undergo any manager games (Multimedia).

I discussed this in beta but from DHorg want to give our support to continue developing and improving this tool that looks great

PS3Hax member d0zs has created another simple PKG tool that will decrypt your eboot, modify it, and pkg it all with a drag and a click. Includes feature as a firmware spoofer (changes both eboot and param), dev_hdd0/dev_usb001 and directory changer.

    To quote:

    Version 1.0

i tried making this as simple as possible, here’s how it works:

    1) Install cygwin w/ default options (if you already have it, skip this step)
    2) Copy the game’s files and create a folder structure like this (Don’t copy USRDIR’s contents except EBOOT.BIN):

-ICON0.PNG & any other files residing in this folder

that's just the bare minimum, include any other files you want in the pkg

    3) Drag the game folder icon (BLES01031 in the example above) to d0zspatcher.exe's icon

that's it. change any settings you want in the GUI and press start.

dobosz has updated his program to, here are the changes:
    - Fix cygwin (unself) wrong folder crash. Should do the trick for most unself bugs.
    - Add check if Game Folder contains space, which can’t be handle by make_self_npdrm.

PS3HaX member dobosz has created quite a handy application, it turns your PS3 game backups into PKG’s, here is a quote from the original thread:

Raw Games Installer is a simple application which was made to help you with patching and building PS3 backup packages.
I don’t claim metods or keys usesed in this application.
This is a simple wrapper between you and hackers software.
Application use code developed by GeoHot, Team Fail0verFlow, and DeLiGhT.
Orginal programs can be found in “dependence” folder.

To download the app and thank dobosz, visit the original thread here

A lot of people are modifying their eboot.bin’s, it isn’t the hardest thing to do, but some people are having problems doing this, just recently michalss has released a tool, that makes the process very easy, here is a quote from the dev:

    1. Get your DECRYPTED EBOOT.BIN (tut HERE)
    2. Put game ID to game ID field
    3. Browse for needed files (there is no check so be sure u selected all)
    4. Slect the Game folder and disk drive (8 chars only, hdd0 it should be)
    5. Select the FW version
    6. Click on EXECUTE
    7. Watch how all it is done for you

Note: Path to game in the PS3 it is always: “dev_[selected drive]/[folderGameName]/USRDIR”

    Future Features:

    * fix some bugs we gonna find
    * complete procedure

Please test it as I never did it properly and post feedback!

I take no credit for this tutorial(ok a little) as it made up of the findings of Naha09 or Israyal, Kayot and Valarnin.. and Japsander. This is a 2 Part Tutorial so you need to read all of it.

    From Japsander

To make a custom PKG Game

    Download EBOOT Creation Kit

This application is all automated. So its a step by step proccess that does EVERYTHING for you

Its preety much Press Enter for the whole proccess. So i wont go into it.
At the end you’ll have a custom PKG. (the file size is very small so you can install it via *Install Package Files (if you want)

Then install the main contense of your game via FTP if the files are too large or Comgenie’s Awesome File Manager.

If the game is cutup into parts, install it to the hard drive first, then move the files from USRDIR to dev_hdd0/game/BLESXXXXX/ do not replace the EBOOT.

    Now for Part 2:

    From Israyal/Naha09

    PART 2

To make a custom PSN Pill. [3.55 or 3.41] (its what appears when you download a PSN game)

1: FTP into /dev_hdd0/vsh/task/ and make folder a folder called 0000XX (the folder name is random so it will be any number) to make it a bit easier, go to Brewology.com and download a random PSN package. Install it. This will make the folder for you.

2: Now you should have a folder 000000XX go into it and pull the folowing files down: d0.pdb (psn database) d1.pdb and ICON_FILE.

3: Drag d0.pdb file into a Hexeditor HXD is a good hexeditor.

4: Change the name of the current PKG to what you want it to be, it has to be same amount of letters as the previous name,(so make sure you get a largish pkg, like a demo or something, so you have more room to work with) otherwise it wont show, although it can be anything, as long as you dont add or subtract to the pdb.

5: Change the Content-ID to the name of your homemade pkg. eg: IV0001-BLESXXXX_00-00000000000000. You have to make these edits to d0.pdb and d1.pdb

6: Now for the part i actually did discover XD. Put .jpg on the end of the ICON_FILE to make it editable in say InfranView. It will come up with a standard icon. Now, take any picture you’d like (this will be the image you’ll see in the bubble)

7: Take the ICON_FILE from earlier, put .jpg on the end and go to edit in InfranView. Look at the dimentions on the picture, change your custom icon to match those of the ICON_FILE. Delete the old icon file. And rename your new custom icon to ICON_FILE.

8: Now fire up FTP, and head to dev_hdd0/task/00000XX/. Upload your files youve just made and also take the custom PKG and upload that as well into the same directory. Turn off the PS3, then turn it back on.

(If you forget the PKG, you’ll get an error stating the package couldnt be found.)

9: Now the package you’ve just uploaded should now be in a “PSN Pill” Press on it, and it will install.

Go back on to part 1 to install the rest of the game.

Just like Backup Managers, some games may not work, the EBOOT creator is still pretty experimental, so it wont be perfect but some games will work. Vanquish for example.
