Coveman has released Open PS2 Loader for Cobra USB, to quote:

    * You don’t need SWAP MAGIC
    * You don’t need any optical disc at all in your PS3
    * Works on PS3 non-BC (tested on my SLIM) (CobraUSB required)

I created an “Open PS2 Loader” ISO file, so you can just load it from Cobra Manager or multiMAN.

Just extract the .rar and transfer it to your internal HDD to /dev_hdd0/PS2ISO

I included the cover so you can either put it in /covers_retro/psx/SLES_806.08_COV.JPG or rename it to “Open PS2 Loader.jpg” and put it along side the ISO in PS2ISO foler.

Note: This only works with CobraUSB Dongle

Found this while checking twitter (Thanks NeoSabin).

In addition to the PSN originals, the Only On PSN program will see the debut of downloadable PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation 3. The first five games included in the program will be Clover Studio’s brawler God Hand, VanillaWare’s action strategy GrimGrimoire and action role-playing game Odin Sphere, Konami’s tactics game Ring of Red, and Capcom’s 3D Ghosts ‘n Goblins spin-off Maximo: Ghosts to Glory. Sony did not detail prices for the Only On PSN originals or the PS2 rereleases.

Im sure most of you already know about the Cobra USB device, that enables backing up and playing of PS1/PS2/PS3 games/ISO’s, we posted information about the dongle here.

So with all the awesome details, you are probably wondering how good the device is, that’s where these two great reviews come in, the first is by PS3HaX member gliitch, the creator of GAXMB(gliitch’s Awesome XMB), it is both a review and a tutorial on how to get started using the device, the other great review is by PS3HaX member Persian McLovin

We are in no way affiliated with the Cobra team, this article is created, merely to help our members make up their minds and with two awesome reviews, this should help a lot :)

It seems that the Cobra usb dongle has now been upgraded to add PS2 ISO support for backwards compatible models. Earlier it was reported that PS1 games were fully supported by the dongle on all models of the PS3. Here is a quote regarding from the website

We have released Cobra Firmware v2.0 and Cobra USB Manager v2.0, which are both available from the downloads page. Changes in this release include:

Added the ability to play PS2 ISO backups from CECHC and CECHE backwards compatible consoles. Support for the remaining backwards compatible models, CECHA and CECHB, will come in a future update

PS3, PSX, DVD and BluRay ISO’s can now be played without a real disc inserted in the PS3. Support for discless PS2 backups will come in a future update

Added an option for those users without a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 (including Slims) to test PS2 original games and ISO backups using the PS2 software only emulator which is by default included with all PS3′s. Please note however that as the software only emulator is slow and very buggy, this feature is disabled by default and is only intended as a gimmick

Cobra USB manager can now make PS3 ISO’s from backups in the standard “Jailbreak” directory format, using the copy function

Cobra USB manager is now less strict with cue/bin filenames

Bugfix: Cobra USB Manager was unable to get the PSX CD-ROM/CD-R title, and displayed “PSX-CDROM” instead

Bugfix: Under rare circumstances, Cobra USB Manager could dump invalid PS3 discs

The necessary download files can be found at the source.

deanrr is forever improving his awesome program for the PS3, the popular multiMAN, it does, PS3 backups, ftp, filemanager, images, hex reading, MP3′s and now he has added PS2 backup support, it is still in the experimental stage, but deanrr is on the way, to having a complete Media Center for the PS3:

    01.11.05 –

    * Fixed mount points reset on launch
    * Added experimental support for PS2 game backups
    * Other minor fixes

    A quote from deanrr:

For those of you who wish to experiment with PS2 backups:

    1) Proper category_game_tool2.xml required to enable PS2 disc icon in XMB/GAME column in jailbreak mode
    2) Original PS2 game required
    3) Original PS3 game required
    4) PS2 backup extracted in one of the folders where multiMAN looks for games (usually with your PS3 backups)

    1) Reboot your PS3 in JB mode
    2) Put original PS3 disc
    3) Launch multiMAN and mount your PS2 game backup
    4) Replace the PS3 disc with original PS2 disc
    5) PS2 disc icon should appear in GAMES column. Try to launch it.

    Dean

    EDIT
As it seems people will misunderstand the purpose of this, i would like to remind people that this is only for BC(Backwards Compatible) PS3 Consoles.

A hacker by the name of Luckluka, has released a patch that allows PS3 consoles, that are ALREADY BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE, to play PS1 and PS2 games while their PS3 is in jailbreak mode (users could not play PS1/PS2 games till now). The applicaiton patches dev_flash to allow just that, so if your interested grab the download link below.

    To quote:

Today, I share with everyone what I call nXMB, it allows you to patch Dev_Flash for PS1 games and PS2 games if your PS3 is backwards-compatible (has 4 USB ports) in PS3 JailBreak Mode!

    What is nXMB?

nXMB is a tool that patches your dev_flash to play PS1 Games (PS2 games also work if you have a bc-console) in JB Mode.

How to use nXMB? And What are its requirements?

    Requirements:

    • PS3 that is JailBroken
    • DEV_FLASH from your PS3
    • JaiCraB’s Firm Loader v0.3

Step 1: Connect via FTP and get your dev_flash
Step 2: Move your dev_flash and the nXMB into a new folder (NOT THE CONTENTS, BUT THE DEV_FLASH ITSELF).
Step 3: Open nXMB and let it patch your dev_flash
Step 4: Copy the contents of that dev_flash to your USB Flash Disk
Step 5: Launch USB Firm Loader

The PS3 will mount your USB flash disk as dev_flash

You will NOT see “Install Package Files” but instead of that you will be able to boot PS1/PS2 games and you will have access to your memory cards!

If you wish to view my old thread that led to this app it is located HERE. Currently trying to make ‘Install Package Files’ also appear in nXMB!

    Have Fun!

Sony has filed a patent for the cell processor to emulate the Emotion Engine bringing back PS2 backwards compatibility to all PS3′s

There are two main ways to emulate hardware. Interpretation is when target code is decoded and converted into a language the host can understand. The other strategy is to decode and recompile programs in the host’s language.
Maybe the concept is better explained another way. Interpretation is like having someone constantly translating English to Japanese for you, non stop, twenty four hours a day wherever you go. Decoding and recompiling is like someone translating a sets of words and putting them in a dictionary you can reference.

Maybe we will see backwards compatibility in upcoming 3.0 firmware update.

Ifcaro who was behind the release of USBLD (PS2 ISO loader for PS3), has now released the source code. The project is now open to anyone who wishes to make improvements.

ifcaro has released his latest build of USB Loader v0.3 RC1 for the PS3. For those unfamiliar with USBLD, this file runs on the PS3 with swap magic and enables us to play PS2 ISOs via external storage device. The newest version adds support for more titles that were previously not compatible. The download link contains two ELF files, one with modhook and one without. Performance with modhook is being tested currently so please try both (and let us know if there is improved compatibility).
