    PS3 firmware update 4.11 is now live. Besides improving “certain aspects” of the underlying system software, you can add this to the ever growing list of useless firmware updates because from what I can tell, it’s basically… Useless.

    To quote:

    Later tonight we’ll be releasing an optional system software update (v4.11) for PlayStation 3. This minor firmware improves certain aspects of system software, and is not mandatory to connect to PSN.
    Again, this update is optional in the US and Canada, and can be downloaded by selecting System Update from the Setting column of the XMB.

    Remember this thread? Well take it with a grain of salt, because “100 per cent concrete” sources are claiming the PS4 WILL debut this year at E3 2012.

    Sony said a while back that they would not let Microsoft get another lead (despite Nintendo coming out first) in the console war so it would only make sense for Sony to announce their eight generation console this year (even though many were hoping they’d announce it last year).

    E3 is a few months away. We have no choice but to wait and see this all unfold for ourselves.

    Weeks ago, Sony president confirmed Sony in No Rush to Reveal PlayStation 4 but according to the latest issue of PSM3 UK gaming magazine, it comes another bold statement regarding the existence of Sony’s next generation console. PSM3 in confirming that the long-rumored successor to the PS3 will make an appearance this year E3.

    “Games industry magazine MCV cited their own sources when they joined PSM3 in confirming PS4′s debut at June’s E3 show, but Sony boss Kaz Hirai served all of us a big glass of ‘shut up’ by denying that there will be any new console at E3. So who’s telling fibs?”, stated the March 2012 issue of PSM3.
    “Nintendo will attend E3 with Wii U, Microsoft will make a next-gen announcement, and Sony need more than Vita to convince the world they’re equipped for a new console era. Don’t hold your breath for hardware designs, but some proof that PS4 exists is vital to Sony’s success. Expect a name –Playstation 4, duh – at E3, with more at TGS.”
    UK trade website MCV reported that undisclosed sources that both Sony and Microsoft are currently gearing up to publicly reveal their next-generation consoles at E3 2012 – MCV writer Ben Parfitt mentioned on Twitter that the sources are “exemplary” and ”ultra high level”.
    “Obviously we can’t reveal our sources,” via Twitter. “But you have my personal word on this – the source is exemplary, 100 per cent concrete, ultra high level.”
    Do you think PS4 will announced this year E3? Leave a comment below tell us your thought about all these rumors swinging around

    Some nice news from a ‘real’ developer as opposed to some random text editors.

    PS3 Homebrew game developer ThatOtherDev has released a Homebrew game called Neo Trail, here is a quote from the source:

    In Neo Trail you control a ship that is constantly moving forward. Once you pass over a square on the grid it will begin to raise up. If you get pushed up onto the top of a fully raised block then the game will reset.

    The high score is displayed but not saved.

    I’m not sure if it’s similar enough to be considered a clone (although that is what it was originally going to be) but it’s obviously inspired by that movie. You know the one.

    Later I might add split screen multiplayer and/or an NPC to play against.

    Im sure you all know of the popular text edit mistake, discovered by DeViL303, that resulted in XMB Filemanager, well he got together with a bunch of other text editors over at PS3Crunch.

    Anyhow, these guys, which includes work from developer aldostool, have released XMB Manager Plus, here is a quote from the source:

    XMB Manager Plus (XMBM+) is a new XMB category based off of REBUG’s “Package Manager”, which is a modded version of the official (debug/Jailbreak) “Install Package Files” XMB option.

    This will replace the “Install Package Files” option or for REBUG CFW “Package Manager”.

    XMB Manager Plus allows the entire PS3 filesystem to be browsed and/or deleted (all file types supported), We have added functions to REBUG’s
    “Package Manager” and renamed it to “Package Manager Plus”, it consists of all previous features plus it now includes new Homebrew Category that has
    options to download a selection of popular PS3 homebrew packages. We have also added a new “Game Data Manager” that contains all games data type
    tools, like saves, backups, etc. There are plenty more options also available in this new update, see the changelog below.

    Main Features in XMBM+ v0.10

    Package Manager Plus
    Allows homebrew/packages to be easily downloaded, installed and deleted.

    File Manager Plus
    Browse and Delete files from all locations such as hdd, usb, etc.

    Game Data Manager
    Includes all the game data tools from main XMB plus some more additions. Things like Gamedata, Savedata, Backups and trophys are contained here.

    Multi-Media Manager
    Browse, Copy, Rename and Play all your PS3′s internal hdds media from one location. All options from the normal XMB categories are available in
    one new combined category.

    Web Links
    This section includes links to some popular websites for easier access.

    A few days ago, an anonymous person gave me a file, claiming it to be 4.10 Dev Firmware, unlike the durandal file, this one was checked by someone on IRC, who confirmed it to be 100% Dex, before i created this post as to not cause any false hope or unfortunate false news, as with all unknown files, i do air a warning of caution, don’t install if you are not sure and install at your own risk.

    A note, this firmware is useless to most of you.

    This wont be important for everyone, or it might be more important than you think.

    Previously when you wanted to deactivate a games console from PSN, you needed to do it via the console itself, now this was not possible, if you have a Jailbroken console as you wont be able to connect to PSN, or if your console is broke, or if you have game shared with someone, you cant very well go to their house and deactivate their console from your account.

    This situation with accounts, became even more problematic, when Sony dropped the allowed PSN account slots/shares that one is allowed, from five to two, previously, the only way to get all consoles/slots cleared was to ring Sony, but since they dropped the amount of slots, they now allow you to do it via your computer, here is how, thanks to a video tutorial by HolmesInFive.

    First go to this link and sign in, then follow the video tutorial:
    https://account.qriocity.com/pc/login.action

    Again to clarify why this might be important to you, as Sony changed the amount of shareable slots on a PSN account from five to two.

    • Your console is broken, so you obviously cant connect to PSN to deactivate.
    • You have a Jailbroken console, so cant connect to PSN to deactivate.
    • You remained on firmware 3.15 to keep the OtherOS function, Sony has barred your access to PSN.
    • You have game shared and the other people wont deactivate, also helps with those scammed through game sharing.
    • You are getting a Vita and want to deactivate a slot, but cant do because of one of the above.
    • You want to deactivate all consoles at once.

    If you liked HolmesInFive’s video, you could subscribe to his Youtube channel, he also has a video on how to Jailbreak your PS3:

    PS3HaX member TizzyT has released quite a useful tool, a Color Logo Creator for the PS3, here is a quote from his thread:

    This is a remake of my “Playstation Color Logo Creator” due to the fact that some were having trouble with it and so I decided to remake it. It makes custom boot logos for modded “CFW/MFW” PS3s.

    Instructions:
    This versions is completely portable and will create anything that is missing on its own.
    Once the program is ran click on “Edit”. Browse to your Photoshop application if you have the “Lite Version”.
    Edit the logo how you would like it and save as DXT5 ARGB 8bpp | interpolated alpha.
    Click on “Preview” to see a sample of what the logo will look like. (Optional)
    Then click on Create to start making your custom logo.
    The Logo will be displayed after it has been created, so just wait for it.

    Info:
    To get the Coldboot Installer.pkg included when the logo is created use the /coldbootinstaller argument.
    For Windows XP users run the program with the argument /noaeroborder to remove the Aero border.
    For people who get the full version who don’t have Photoshop use /internalps to extract and use the included Photoshop.
    PS: More information on my blog

    UPDATE 1:
    I fixed a couple unwanted behaviors and bugs, added a couple things to make it handle situations where the program would throw an exception.

    Planned:
    Logo that fills screen < maybe sometime soon
    Effects in logo < might or might not happen

    Source here at PS3HaX

    Download Lite Version(For those who already have Photoshop)

    For those of you who are experienced with Dropbox, it is an amazing FREE filesharing/cloud based solution among your various devices. Dropbox has been integrated in the PS3s new “upgraded browser” and currently works with all types of media. Upload from the PS3 to Dropbox may still cause the system to freeze. The Dropbox website now is accessible via PS3 also (previously was disabled).

    To quote:

    With the release of PS3 firmware v4.10, gamers across the PlayStation Network are now not only scurrying around their consoles to find new, and often hidden features added by Sony, but are also exploring the upgraded web browser. However, with that upgraded browser now comes support for what could be considered a killer app on the PS3… Dropbox support.

    If there’s one thing that many, many PS3 owners have been longing for, it was Dropbox support on their consoles. For those not familiar with the service, Dropbox allows users to upload files from their computers (movies, music, etc.), and then download those files from just about anywhere, and now that “anywhere” includes the PlayStation 3. Dropbox’s main site was previously unusable on the PlayStation 3, but is now fully functional (except for uploads from the PS3 itself, which may cause the system to freeze).

    We tested everything from music to movies, all downloaded with no problems at all, and boy were the downloads fast! This is one incredible addition to the PS3 arsenal, and may very well have gone unnoticed by many. With Dropbox offering 2GB free just for signing up, folks will no longer have to worry about portable hard drives and USB thumb drives to move their content to their PS3… how cool is that!?

    PS3HaX Homebrew Developer deroad is always contributing to either the PS3 scene or the PS Vita scene, he has released a few cool PS3 homebrew apps, contributed to the PS3/Vita Dev Wikis and has written some awesome tutorials, here is one of them, which he has recently updated:

    In computing, a system call (aka Syscall) is how a program requests a service from an operating system’s kernel. This may include hardware related services (e.g. accessing the hard disk), creating and executing new processes, and communicating with integral kernel services (like scheduling). System calls provide the interface between a process and the operating system.
    (Wikipedia – System Call)

    With PSL1GHT we can call all the 989 Syscalls.
    it’s really simple to call one, but you need to know how many parameters it needs; there are some syscalls that needs just 1 parameter, there are others that needs 8 parameters.

    You can find the list of syscalls with the numbers of the parameters here: Ps3DevWiki Syscalls

    Once you know the numbers of the parameter that you need (and the type of the parameters if they are written), you are ready to call one:

    first thing add the following include:

    #include <ppu-lv2.h>

    Then you can call the syscall:

    lv2syscallN(number_of_the_syscall, parameters… );
    Change N with the number of the parameters, and put the number of the syscall that you need to call with the parameters.
    some examples:

    Shutdown the PS3:
    1)Look into the dev wiki and you will see that the syscall to shutdown the PS3 is number 379 ( sys_sm_shutdown ) and it wants 4 parameters:
    2)So now i can call the syscall with 4 parameters:

    lv2syscall4(379,SHUTDOWN_PARAM,0,0,0);
    now on the wiki it says, that the shutdown value is 0×1100 or 0×100, so i will write:
    lv2syscall4(379,0×100,0,0,0)

    now if i call this on a stupid homebrew like:
    #include <ppu-lv2.h>
    int main(){
    lv2syscall4(379,0×100,0,0,0);
    return 0;
    }

    it will really shutdown the ps3.

    now if you are not sure to completely understood this, i will make another example:
    Get current time:
    now this example comes from the PSL1GHT SDK:

    this is the function that get the current time on the ps3.

    #include <ppu-lv2.h>
    s32 sysGetCurrentTime(u64 *sec,u64 *nsec)
    {
    lv2syscall2(145,(u64)sec,(u64)nsec);
    return_to_user_prog(s32);
    }

    now it uses 2 parameters so it calls lv2syscall2, then it needs the parameters that will get the value sec and nsec. now, in this function you can see that it ask the return of this syscall; to call any return of a determinate syscall, you can simply ask it by calling:

    return_to_user_prog(type_of_the_variable);

    you need to define the type of the returning variable. in that case it was s32 (aka signed int).
    so it calls:
    return_to_user_prog(s32);

    if it was a normal integer, you had to call:
    return_to_user_prog(int);

    to compile it correctly you need to simply add the following flags:

    -llv2

    PS3 Dev KaKaRoTo tweeted a link this morning and when i clicked on it, i was greeted with a page containing images of a dismantled PS3 control pad, they were the beginnings of quite an interesting control pad modification, what is just as interesting is they thread is on the Official PS3 Forums.

    Doppelgangergang a member of Sony’s official PS forum, was fed up with loosing his Bluetooth ear piece and annoyed at the terrible battery life it had, so he decided to mod the BT headset into his control pad, here is a quote from the source:

    I’m a rather heavy Online Player on PSN, and it’s not the same without voice chat, being unable to tell what you see or need to tell to make your team mates do something.

    The problem is, my state-of-the-fart $8 Bluetooth Headset, while having decent audio quality, is too small, easily gets lost and the batteries are so bad that it can cut out at any given time.

    One day on the boring night of July 3, I was cleaning my DualShock because the right analog was sticking and I noticed that there is a small space you can use to cram in a small item.

    The EFF otherwise known as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is always fighting for the little guy, their latest campaign is to get Jailbreaking of all devices seen as legal, this of course including the PS3, here is a quote from the source:

    The Problem – Smartphones, tablets, and video game consoles are powerful computers with lots of untapped potential. Yet many of these devices are set up to run only software that’s been approved by the manufacturer.  Modifying a device to run independent software – known as jailbreaking – is important to programmers, enthusiasts, and users. But jailbreaking creates legal uncertainty. Some device manufacturers claim that jailbreaking violates Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which carries stiff penalties.

    The Solution – EFF is asking the U.S. Copyright Office to declare that jailbreaking does not violate the DMCA, and we need your help. In 2010, the Copyright Office said jailbreaking smartphones doesn’t violate the DMCA.  This year, we’re asking them to renew that exemption (otherwise it will expire) and expand it to cover tablets. We’re also asking for a new exemption to allow jailbreaking of video game consoles.

    How You Can Help – The Copyright Office needs to hear from people who depend on the ability to jailbreak to write, use, and/or tinker with independent software (from useful apps to essential security fixes) for smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. You can submit comments online at this link.

    Here are some questions you might want to address in your comments:

    1. Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?
    2. What’s your background (i.e., are you a developer, hobbyist, academic, independent researcher, user, etc.)?
    3. What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?
    4. Please explain why you want to jailbreak this device. What limitations do you face if you aren’t able to jailbreak it? Is there software you couldn’t run, computing capabilities you wouldn’t have, cool things you couldn’t do, etc.?

    PS3Hax recently reported about a GTA IV mod, a fun and free way to enjoy your modified PS3 consoles.

    JDMAlex and NativeSith, two PSX-SCENE developers have released their latest mod GTA IV WARZ – A NewISH Hope, full of epic new Jedi-like powers for you to use!

    GTA IV WARZ – A NewISH Hope:

    … a long time ago, an a galaxy far, far away; a scene developer by the name of Native Jedi reached out to Obi-T000 Kenobi, and other moderators throughout the scene worlds for help, because the Evil Empire was chasing him throughout the universe. The Empire was after him, for he was in possession of custom game modifications; ones that could be used to cripple the Empires plans on total universal domination.

    The Empire seized control of his custom game modifications, and then all hope had seemed lost… but he joined with Obi-T000, and set up a secret Rebel base at PSX-Scene with Pave SoloEvilblunta and J2-D2; where they could once again design custom modifications for the games they own, without the fear of the Empire awaiting in ambush, trying to diminish and destroy their efforts.

    With a team of other GTAIV game modders, two members of the Rebel Alliance, J2-D2 and Native Jedi, have unleashed their new plans that will bring a new era in GTAIV modifications. But with the ever watchful empire ready to destroy anyone who opposes them, the Rebels must remain secret in transferring the files. Please, you must resit the dark side. Join the Rebel Alliance today! And remember… The first rule of GTA IV WARZ, is there is no GTA IV WARZ!

    It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although GTA IV WARZ – A NewISH Hope Edition had been successfully released into the universe,Native Vader has put together the a new troop of enforcers to help in the pursuit of the Rebels.

    Evading the watchful eye of the Empire, a team of Rebels have installed GTA IV Wars onto their Jailbroken or Custom Firmware PS3s, and have set up rules about not posting pictures or videos.

    The genius lord Native Vader, on his quest to find pictures and videos of J2-D2‘s and Native Jedi‘s mod, has dispatched a remote torrent into the farthest reaches of the internet…

    After the Empire’s disappointing 1st appearance, they have come back and reinvented themselves.
